The European Dialogue Forum is a joint body of FUEN and YEN that seeks formalised, political dialogue with the European Parliament. The Forum was established in 2008 and is a body currently composed of seven representatives of FUEN and two representatives of YEN, including the two presidents. At the latest Assembly of Delegates, its members for the period of 2016-2019 were elected and at this week’s meeting the priorities, work structure and plans for the coming years will be discussed in Strasbourg. Smaller languages run a risk of digital extinction because the amount of content available is significantly smaller, and because speakers start to use other, larger languages for accessing information. Once speakers do not use their mother tongue anymore in some specific domains, that language is losing terrain. This has important social and political implications. According to a Eurobarometer survey, 46% of all Europeans only speak their mother tongue, and 62% of all European do not speak English well enough to hold a conversation. For more than a year the German minority in the Opole Voivodeship in Poland has been protesting against the expansion of the city of Opole. Through the administrative reform, municipalities inhabited by the German minority were annexed to the city. This reform has a detrimental effect on the rights of the minority, e.g. in relation to topographical signs, the use of the minority language with authorities and their political participation. On Wednesday 18 January 2017 the first official meeting of the European Dialogue Forum (EDF) of FUEN and YEN since the election its members at the FUEN Congress in 2016 took place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. FUEN is open to any partnership that will advance the rights of the European minorities and promote the linguistic and cultural diversity in Europe. FUEN does this with other NGOs, works together with research centres and academic establishments and engages with politicians and institutions on local, regional, national and international level.
