Evolllution Logo, click to return to homepageBy Walter G. Bumphus - Evolllution. Today more than ever, a postsecondary education is critical to success in the labor market. However, costs for higher education are skyrocketing and the discussion around access and completion has dominated national discourse. Two-year colleges are providing some fascinating solutions to these challenges. Starting in Tennessee and spreading across the country, the tuition-free community college movement is driving home the idea that higher education should be accessible to anyone willing to work for it. It’s Time to Demand More of American Colleges: Here’s How

Evolllution Logo, click to return to homepageBy Andrew Kelly - Evolllution. For too long, we’ve judged the quality of American higher education according to Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart’s famous standard for pornography: “I know it when I see it.” Our current system evaluates colleges almost entirely on “inputs”—the academic pedigree of the students they admit, the credentials of their faculty, the number of volumes in their library, the flashiness of their amenities, and so on. Yet, there is nothing in our constitution that makes this explicit. A result has been growing involvement by the federal government, at both the K-12 and tertiary levels. An example of this, and the backlash it has created, can be seen in the Common Core Curriculum. More...

The China “Crisis”

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "higheredstrategy.com logo"By Alex Usher. It’s no secret that China dominates the world market when it comes to sending students abroad.  About 20% of all globally-mobile students are from China; in countries like the US, Canada, and the UK, they are far and away the number one source of foreign students. Boards of Governors

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "higheredstrategy.com logo"By Alex Usher. So, thanks to UBC, everyone wants to talk about Boards of Governors these days.  How they’re not transparent enough, how they’re not representative enough, etc.  What should we make of these claims?
On the transparency thing, I think the radicals have at least half a point, regarding some universities at least.  Practice varies from one institution to the next, but it’s not hard to find some boards where harmful secret practices exist. More...
