Rankings in Institutional Strategies and Processes (RISP) roundtable

LogoAround 25 university leaders and senior managers from 19 countries across Europe gathered in Brussels on 5 June for a roundtable organised in the framework of the EUA-led project on university rankings entitled: “Rankings in Institutional Strategies and Processes” (RISP). The event was organised in order for the project team to engage in further data collection as well as to discuss and get feedback on the preliminary findings of the RISP project.
Universities worldwide are increasingly being confronted with ranking and classification initiatives both at national and international level. While many institutions have reservations about the methodologies used by the ranking compilers, there is a growing recognition that rankings and classifications are here to stay and many universities feel the need to respond. The RISP project is the first European-wide survey which seeks to analyse the ways in which universities across Europe respond to rankings – consciously or unconsciously – and it will also look in the final report to propose recommendations on how rankings can be used to promote institutional development while also identifying potential pitfalls that the universities should avoid.
The project partners, EUA, the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), the French Rectors’ Conference (CPU) and the Academic Information Centre (AIC) in Latvia, now plan to carry out a detailed analysis of all of the quantitative and qualitative information that has been collected during the project survey, site visits, and roundtable in order to formulate a comprehensive report that will be launched in Brussels in November. More information on the RISP project, which is supported by funding from the EU Lifelong Learning Programme, is available on the project website. More...

70 per cent of Australians against higher university fees

Polling commissioned by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) shows that 70% of Australians oppose university fee increases for students and that higher education reforms are one of the most unpopular measures in the budget. The figures confirm that the community are angry about the broken election commitment not to alter university funding arrangements, as well as policies that would see students from poorer backgrounds locked out of quality education.
“These are budget measures that Christopher Pyne and the Government kept secret before the election for a reason,” said Jeannie Rea, NTEU National President.
“On top of a 20% cut in government funding to universities, students will face debts of over $100,000 and repayments well into their 40s and 50s. Women and poorer students will be the most affected by these changes. 55% of Australians disagreed with the Government’s move to a more “Americanised” system.
“Australians do not want an Americanised system. They want to protect the current system that trains students for high skilled jobs, promotes research and critical thinking, and one that is equal and accessible,” Rea said. The poll showed that vast majorities of Australians think savings would be better targeted at high income earners, through implementing a mining tax or by closing superannuation tax loopholes for the wealthy.

Gender Inequity still a concern with women leaders missing in universities

http://www.nteu.org.au//var/files/thumbs/a780532dd116f8da145bac8c4c7961bc_e7e2a056b6c5e8722188bac5fbb3550f_w80_.jpgBy Terri Macdonald. Two separate articles on the issue of gender equity highlight that there is still much that needs to be done if we are to make any headway on this issue in our universities.
Associate Dean of Research at LaTrobe University, Tanya Fitzgerald, has published an article entitled "Female leaders are missing in academia" (The Conversation, 18th June 2014) where she points out that the vast imbalance between the numbers of women and mean in senor levels in Australian universities does not appear to be a cause for concern by university leaders. She notes that while many universities host research centres and promote the intellectual contributions of academics undertaking gender research, university leaders appear blind to the issue of gender equity within the academic cohort.
This is despite, as Fitgerald notes, the unprecedented growth in the numbers of women in higher education over the last 40 years, outpacing growth in male enrolments by two to one.
The issue of gender equity is also noted in an editorial in the Conversation  "Male graduates earn more than female graduates: study" (The Conversation, 18th June 2014) which reports that the most recent study by the Graduate Careers Australia has found an aggregate gender wage gap of 9.4% in favour of male graduates, which decreased to 4.4% when allowances were made for controls such as the courses studied by males and females

NTEU supports CSP funding of sub degree higher education courses in public TAFE and universities

http://www.nteu.org.au//var/files/thumbs/a780532dd116f8da145bac8c4c7961bc_e7e2a056b6c5e8722188bac5fbb3550f_w80_.jpgBy Jeannie Rea. Amongst the avalanche of government funding cuts, student fee rises, deregulation and privatisation in the Abbott Government’s first Federal Budget there was one reform arising from a recommendation of the Kemp-Norton Review of the Demand Driven Model that the NTEU does not oppose.
The NTEU supports the extension of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) to sub degrees in higher education courses – in public institutions.
Such courses are best delivered in public universities and TAFE institutions, which have the expertise and infrastructure to provide students with a quality and well supported education.
The NTEU does not support the extension of CSPs to private providers
of degrees or sub-degree higher education courses. More...
