SAT exam to undergo major facelift

http://beta.images.theglobeandmail.com/media/www/images/flag/gam-masthead.pngBy James Bradshaw. The world’s most prominent university entrance exam, the SAT, is undergoing a major facelift in a bid to preserve the relevance of the century-old standard for measuring readiness for higher education. Changes announced Wednesday by the U.S.-based College Board, which administers the SAT, are the most high-profile example of a broader re-examination of the way standardized tests measure students’ cognitive and test-taking skills. In Canada, provincial tests in public schools are undergoing changes to better measure softer, less academic skills like creativity, while entrance exams for law and medical schools are perennially criticized. Canada’s top universities slip in 2014 world rankings

the-montreal-gazette1By Karen Seidman. All three of Canada’s top universities slipped marginally in the 2014 World Reputation Rankings — a sign that the federal government’s pledge in February’s budget to invest $1.5 billion in new research funding may be just what the country’s universities need to bolster their sex appeal in a competitive world market. Although the University of Toronto is still ranked higher than McGill University — and is the only Canadian university to crack the top 20 — the gap did narrow a bit between them. U of T slipped to the 20th spot from 16th, while McGill and the University of British Columbia both dropped two places to 33rd. Read more...

A New SAT Aims to Realign With Schoolwork

New York TimesBy Tamar Lewin. Saying its college admission exams do not focus enough on the important academic skills, the College Board announced on Wednesday a fundamental rethinking of the SAT, ending the longstanding penalty for guessing wrong, cutting obscure vocabulary words and making the essay optional. The president of the College Board, David Coleman, criticized his own test, the SAT, and its main rival, the ACT, saying that both had “become disconnected from the work of our high schools.
”In addition, Mr. Coleman announced programs to help low-income students, who will now be given fee waivers allowing them to apply to four colleges at no charge. Read more...

The Quest For Higher Education At All Costs

Nigerian News from Leadership NewspapersBy . In the quest for higher education in other countries, Nigerians settle for anything including substandard universities which admit as low as six passes. KUNI TYESSI just back from Ghana takes a look at Ghanian Universities and Nigerian patronage.
That over 150,000 Nigerians are currently enrolled in Ghanaian universities may not be a surprise, but what may be is the fact that about 60 per cent of these students are some of those who for one reason or the other could not gain admission into Nigerian universities and other institutions of higher learning. Are Japan’s efforts at internationalization succeeding or not?

By . Not a day goes by without Japanese school children hearing the terms globalization (グロバール化) or internationalization (国際化), and why it’s so important for their future careers. In fact, the whole country seems to be swept up in a fervor of these two words. But do Japanese people really understand the meanings of them, or are the terms just being used as catchphrases?
Enter Austin, an international student who has been living in Japan since 2012. Last week he posted a thought-provoking piece called “Some Thoughts – And Doubts – About Japan’s Internationalization” on Tofugu, a Japanese language and culture blog. The piece has circulated around the Internet, and was even picked up and summarized in Japanese by popular Japanese blogger Madame Riri. In it, Austin addresses how while Japan may be making efforts to globalize on the surface, it still lacks something on a deeper level that is preventing it from becoming truly internationalized. Join the debate after we take look at some of his thoughts below.
