The English language in the ‘Asian century’

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Phan Le Ha. Asia is seen as the future for the internationalisation of higher education, and the globalisation of English is enabling this future. Countries in Asia have therefore started to align their internationalisation strategies towards this Asia focus. For example, Singapore’s Minister of Education Heng Swee Keat concluded in his talk at the Singapore Management University on 16 February: “Asia is going to be a critical part of our future. The more we understand what is going on in Asia, the better our future will be. We must position ourselves as a global Asian hub that connects Asia with the world.”
The internationalisation of higher education and the English language play a key role in Singapore’s endeavour to become a ‘global Asian hub’ and to identify and create ‘advantages that others find relevant’. Read more...

U-Multirank passes university recruitment goal of 500

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgThe new, European Commission-supported international university ranking U-Multirank announced last week that 540 higher education institutions had registered to participate, exceeding its goal of 500. Registration was “still open, but space is limited”.
The multi-dimensional ranking said in a statement last week that higher education institutions from more than 60 countries would be in the initial listing to be published for the first time in early 2014.
“The currently registered institutions represent a balanced sample in different ways. In line with recruitment targets, about 75% are in the European Union (EU) and 25% in non-EU countries,” said the release.
“Different profiles of higher education institutions will take part in the first round of U-Multirank, for instance, universities of applied sciences and universities with a technical profile (around 12% each), comprehensive (around 50%) and specialised universities etcetera.
“A large number of research-intensive universities are also represented.” U-Multirank has bumped up against some resistance from research institutions, with criticism led by Britain, home to the companies producing two of the top global rankings, and by Europe’s League of Research Universities. Leading 1960s university slumps in Guardian ranking

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy David Jobbins. The University of Sussex – one of the top new universities of the 1960s and home of the influential Institute for Development Studies – has plummeted in the 2014 Guardian University Guide, published last Tuesday. Sussex dropped from 27 to 50 in the annual rankings, a victim largely of the problems faced by its graduates in finding work in a challenging employment environment, particularly in philosophy and anthropology. Sussex was ranked at number 11 in the 2012 tables (published in 2011). Read more...

Don’t throw ‘unemployment monkey’ at us – Universities

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Jan Petter Myklebust. In an interview with the newspaper Berlingske Tidende, Danish Minister of Education Morten Østergaard called for a ‘cultural revolution’ at universities. He wants all graduates – even graduates in the Eskimo language – to be prepared for work in the private sector. Feeling stabbed in the back after years of adapting to extensive university reforms, Professor Jens Oddershede, chair of the Danish Rectors’ Conference, told Forskerforum: “The minister should not throw the ‘unemployment monkey’ at us.” Read more...

EU backs pan-African quality assurance initiatives

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Ard Jongsma. Exploring areas of support for higher education in the framework of the Africa-European Union Strategy, the European Commission has quality assurance and international accreditation high on its agenda. Some of the options under review are promoting a common understanding on quality issues, support for quality assurance agencies, development of continental standards and guidelines, and possible expansion of the African Higher Education Harmonisation and Tuning initiative that ended earlier this year. World Bank launches ‘centres of excellence’ initiative

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Ishmael Tongai. The World Bank expects to kick off a new US$430 million Africa “Centres of Excellence” initiative next month, aimed at strengthening capacity in universities in West and Central Africa. The project will promote regional specialisation among participating universities and strengthen their ability to deliver quality training and research. Andreas Blom, the World Bank’s lead economist for African education, launched the project at the 13th Association of African Universities Conference of Rectors, Vice-chancellors and Presidents of African Universities (COREVIP), held in Gabon’s capital Libreville late last month. The World Bank will invest US$129 million, and institutions will be eligible to apply for funding of up to US$8 million per excellence centre, Kavita Watsa, the bank’s senior communications officer for Africa, told University World News. http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgByDavid Jobbins. The sixth Global University Summit, or GUS, has put the role of universities in economic regeneration firmly on the agenda for the G8 summit of world leaders in Northern Ireland later this month. The two-day meeting in London from 29-30 May focused on the challenge of securing global growth and prosperity. Higher education can be a bad financial investment – Study

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Alison Moodie. For years, a college education has been viewed in the United States as integral to securing a stable, well-paid job. President Barack Obama has emphasised this point time and again, most recently during a speech on 31 May, when he urged Congress to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling this summer.
“The surest path to the middle-class is some form of higher education," Obama said in the Rose Garden of the White House, surrounded by college students. “Higher education cannot be a luxury for a privileged few."
But college is not for everyone, and can in some cases be a bad financial investment, according to a new study by the Brookings Center on Children and Families. Read more...
