Academia and Wikipedia

Academia and Wikipedia
A back-and-forth debate, prompted by Larry Sanger's criticisms (carried here a few days ago), has erupted over the role of Wikipedia. In this article, a response to Clay Shirkey's response to Sanger, Dinah Boyd argues that "many librarians, teachers and academics fear Wikipedia (not dislike it) because it is not properly understood, not simply because it challenges their privilege." Moreover, Wikipedia should not be taken at face value, she argues, citing a weak entry on social network as an example. More...

David Wiley created a nifty little tool over the holidays, a script that grabs popular links in del.icio.us and wraps them in an RSS feed. Written in Python, which (thanks to my holiday project) I can now read. More...

'Single sign-on' Moves a Step Closer
First the announcement: "JISC and Becta recently announced the launch of the UK Access Management Federation, bringing a 'single sign-on' to network and online resources a step closer." Now the criticism: in what sense is this single sign-on? People have to sign on to Google, Yahoo, various blogs, discussion lists, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr and much more. More...

Bootstrapping A New Landing Site

Bootstrapping A New Landing Site
Alan Levine, CogDogBlog, December 28, 2013
Web redesign is in the wind again and the snappy new WordPress templates of the 2000s will look as dated as old Geocities sites after the transition to the dynamic Javascript and CSS enabled sites of the 2010s powered by applications such as JQuery and Bootstrap. More...

University of Illinois at Chicago: Virtual Reality’s CAVE Pioneer

University of Illinois at Chicago: Virtual Reality’s CAVE Pioneer
Brad Grimes, Ed Tech, January 30, 2013

Wow, this feels like a black from the past, reading about the CAVE - the first CAVE was launched in 1992. The idea was to create a fully enclosed virtual environment (similar to what we would today call the holodeck). This article talks about CAVE2, launched last October. More...

Why I’m Now Embedding ORCID Metadata in PDFs

Why I’m Now Embedding ORCID Metadata in PDFs
Brian Kelly, UK Web Focus, January 29, 2013

Brian Kelly suggests that PDF authors should encode metadata into the PDF file so Google will be able to retrieve it. In addition to including the title of the work, he suggests that authors include the ORCID author id (ORCID stands for 'Open Researcher and Contributor ID' - of course it goes without saying that now everyone who creates a PDF will be an 'open researcher or contributor').
