No mechanism for detecting plagiarism in Pakistan

By Shafaq Iqbal. Zia Batool was working at the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for over a decade in the capacity of Quality Assurance director general and was overseeing plagiarism cases throughout the country. But today she is struggling to gain her job back.
According to some PhD students, academics and educationalists, one of the biggest reasons for plagiarism in Pakistan is language issues. Scholars face difficulty in translating their own thoughts from their mother tongue to English. AVCNU Scribe Urges Varsities to be More Strict on Plagiarism

Nigerian Bulletin - Nigeria's Best Latest News, Updates & PromotionsThe Secretary of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU), Prof. Michael Faborode, on Monday urged universities to be more strict on plagiarism, especially among postgraduate students.
Faborode told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that universities should adopt the use of the high-speed anti-plagiarism software, capable of detecting academic fraud at any level.
The association had after its 29th Annual Conference held at the Afe Babalola University, Ado- Ekiti, on June 2 announced the introduction of anti-plagiarism software. More...

Fighting Plagiarism in Spain

Education Minister Fires University Rector for Plagiarism

The education and science minister has fired the rector of the Russian State Social University after she was alleged to have heavily plagiarized her doctoral thesis, a news report said.
The dissertation of Lidia Fedyakina, who was appointed rector in 2012, contained "serious flaws" and a number of "incorrect borrowings," Izvestia reported Tuesday, citing a report by the Higher Attestation Committee, which reviewed the thesis at a meeting on Sunday. More...

Riken affair boosts orders for anti-plagiarism software

The Japan TimesA growing number of universities in Japan are introducing software systems to detect plagiarism in academic papers amid the evolving controversy over the “STAP cell” papers produced by Riken, the state-backed research institute.
Under an ordinance that took effect in April 2013, the education ministry has made it mandatory for all doctoral theses to be published on the Internet, replacing its decades-old rule requiring publication in print.
An official at a company selling plagiarism-checking systems said, “I believe more and more universities are introducing the system because if plagiarism comes to light after the theses are published, the credibility of the university’s oversight will be called into question.” One popular product is iThenticate, which was developed by a U.S. company.
