Rich Media >> Get Rich Quick

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Rich Media >> Get Rich Quick
Though the term 'rich media' has been around for a while it is only recently that the push toward rich media has begun to acquire meme status. Of course 'rich media' could mean anything from a lecture streamed using Breeze to a podcast to an immersive simulation. This article covers the push to introduce rich media and outlines some of the 'stumbling points' - bandwidth, of course, but also pedagogical issues. More...

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. OpenLaszlo
I spent about an hour this morning touring this site, and my time was well rewarded. Laszlo is a rich and yet intuitive scripting language that allows website authors to create attractive and interactive websites using remote data (such as XML or database contents). More...

New MacTels Using “Trusted Computing”?

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. New MacTels Using “Trusted Computing”?
There is dismay in the Apple user community as it appears that new systems will prevent owners from playing 'unauthorized' content. "It’s like a blender that will only chop the food that Cuisinart says you’re allowed to chop". More...

Cover Story: Transforming America's Schools

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Jonathan Potts: Cover Story: Transforming America's Schools, Carnegie Mellon Today November 19, 2005

Mitchell Weisburgh sent me the link to this interesting article about a new program at Carnegie Mellon "to train doctoral students from several disciplines - including psychology, computer science, philosophy and statistics - to conduct applied educational research." I am all in favour of research - it is, after all, what I do - but need to caution that training in reasearch assumes - doesn't it? - that an appropriate research paradigm in the field is already in place. More...

Interesting comment, just sent to me by email. "Just search for a book you are reading, or a book you have read. You will then be able to ask any question you have, and help answer other readers' questions". More...
