This is really local news, but from my perspective it's significant news, as I've played a part in it. Desire2Learn, an LMS company based in Waterloo, Ontario, is setting up a branch office here in Moncton. In the building where I work, in fact. And they're hiring. This is partially (maybe mostly) the result of a project we at NRC are working on with them. On the NRC side, the real credit for getting this project pulled together and funded belongs to Rod Savoie. The University fo Moncton is also a partner in the project. Anyhow, D2L is having a big launch and Technology and Career Exhibition on the 28th here at the Scientific Park. For myself I will say that while I have focused on the e-learning technology and theory (which I think played a role in the project). More...

Curt Bonk has some very nice things to say about Canada (and about me... *blush*) in this retrospective of 9 different trips here over the last two years. Good observations, goofy photos, and a fun sense of humour ("they made me wear the Calgary Flames shirt for my journey up to Edmonton..."). Hm. I think if you're 'balancing' the virtual and the physical then you're understanding at least one of them incorrectly. The virtual and the physical aren't some kind of opposing realities or competing realms that need in some way to be 'balanced'. The difference between the physical and the virtual is illusory - it is a distinction that has been marketed hard by companies that want to keep sellig you paper. But the virtual is the physical - the people online are real, the computers are real, the impact of your words is real, and it all happens in the physical world to people with physical bodies. I am in Taiwan and so - of course - my downes.ca email has crashed and burned. I have no email coming in or out, and the email newsletter has been disabled (RSS is still ok though). And it's really hard to work with tech support people with a 12-hour time difference.
But I'm having a great time. And I've posted slides from my workshop and presentation on Slideshare. I have video from the presentation too, I'll see if I can't post that (I would do more video but I can't get around the DVD produced by video cameras - of all the useless formats to give me to use! I can't find any easy way to turn it into something my computer understands (ie., can do something with besides just play).
