Journalism Curricula? Get Me Rewrite

By . A year ago, in February 2014, the metrics on journalism education were trending in worrisome directions. Enrollments were down at some of the most prestigious programs in the country for the second year in a row, and a Poynter Institute study revealed that journalism faculty members viewed their programs as far more central to the journalistic enterprise than their professional colleagues did. More troubling, almost 40 percent of educators themselves acknowledged that their programs were not keeping pace with changes in the industry. More...

Suite...

Here's the results of the interactive exercise during my talk on "Curriculum from the Classroom Up" at UNESCO Barcelona.   I asked:  “WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE THINGS OUR STUDENTS NEED TO LEARN IN ORDER TO THRIVE IN THE WORLD WE LIVE IN NOW?”
The reason I am optimistic about educational change is becaue, whenever I ask this question, people come up with great insights.  We can build on these.  What's on YOUR card?
In 90 seconds, here's what people came up with. More...

Educationists don’t agree to PM orders for curriculum changes

By Ashfaq Yusufzai. Educationists have opposed the prime minister’s orders for revision of the curriculum of schools, colleges and universities insisting after the passage of 18th Constitutional Amendment, it was the domain of the provincial governments and not the centre.
“Policy, planning, curriculum and governance have devolved to provinces after the 18th Constitutional Amendment, so the provinces can make changes to curriculum in line with their own needs. The centre can’t interfere in such matters,” Khadim Hussain, the managing director of Bacha Khan Trust Educational Foundation (BKTEF), told Dawn. More...

Universities need to re-think the way they offer module choices

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/c55907932af8ee96c21b7d89a9ebeedb4602fbbf/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifBy Laura Maw. Restrictive modules and option blocks are preventing students from studying their preferred topics. The higher you climb the education ladder, the more freedom you have over the topics you study. Right?
Well, not necessarily. More...

Preparing to apply to university? Joint degrees are taken every year by almost one in five undergraduates (100,000), allowing them to study two or more courses in the same time frame as a single subject. More...

Diversification or Specialization? The Key to Growing Graduate Programming

The EvoLLLutionBy  - EvoLLLution. A key evolutionary artifact in graduate education today is the fact that the baby boom generation is aging out of the educational system. Baby boomers fueled the growth of American higher education in the 1960s, first as they sought undergraduate degrees and then across the next four decades as they sought to complete that long-ago unfinished undergraduate program or secure a master’s degree for their next promotion. While there are echoes of this generation, spikes in the pipeline so to speak, the simple truth is that our population is plateauing. That’s a trend that will continue for some time to come, and it does not bode well for graduate education going forward. More...

Suite...
