Today the League of European Research Universities (LERU) becomes a signatory to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment. The Declaration, issued in 2012 by a group of scientific journal editors and publishers, makes a number of recommendations for improving the way in which the quality of research output is evaluated.As an association of 21 research-intensive universities promoting good research policies in Europe, LERU particularly welcomes the statement in the Declaration that the use of Journal Impact Factors (JIF*) as a simple measure of quality for individual articles is not adequate.
