Webometrics Ranking of World Universities - 2nd 2014 edition
NEW: 2nd 2014 edition
July edition has been published
Data collection for the new edition has finished without major problems, so the Ranking is now in its 11th year of publication. Please, take into account that the following information updates the methodology described in that section:
Revision of invalid entries
From this edition we are enforcing our policy of requesting full 24/7 availability of the websites, so those universities failing to answer our ping requests (two consecutive) to their servers are now excluded. The total count of universities ranked is now just below 22000, a decrease explained by this new protocol.
Policy change regarding duplicate domains
As previously informed, we also changed our policy regarding the universities with two or more central web domains, a bad practice that it is going to be even more penalized than before. Until now, all the main web domains of the university were ranked, but only the one with the better web indicators was published, even if this was the old or the not-preferred one in the central homepage. This procedure is still applied when both domains maintain their independence, but If the old domain redirects to the new one, this will be the one ranked and published. As expected, this is having strong (negative) impact on a few universities.
Changes in the calculation of indicators
Regarding PRESENCE. Rich files are calculated (pdf, doc/docx, ppt/pptx, ps/eps) and excluded from the total number of web pages.
Regarding VISIBILITY. The 10 top linking domains and their corresponding backlinks are excluded.
Regarding OPENNESS. Google Scholar is again used for this indicator, combining the full number of items with those published during the 2009-2013 period.
Regarding EXCELLENCE. The Scimago data (top 10% most cited papers by discipline) has been updated to the five year period 2008-2012. More...
