Science Europe: The Need for 'Diamond Engagement' around Open Access to High Quality Research Output

A new Opinion Paper has been published today by Science Europe’s Scientific Committee for the Social Sciences. The publication, entitled ‘The Need for ‘Diamond Engagement’ around Open Access to High Quality Research Output’, addresses two audiences: scientists, especially those who have been traditionally more resistant to the OA approach, and policy makers. In it, the Scientific Committee for Social Sciences proposes a ‘Diamond Engagement’ concept with the three key principles: Partnership; Standardisation and Interoperability; and Enabling Structures. read more. EC Forth SSH Stakeholders meeting, 10 May 2017: EASSH revisits the DGRI Issue Papers for the HLG

On 10 May 2017, the European Commission invited EASSH and other SSH stakeholders to discuss the State of play of Societal challenge 6 and Integration of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) in Horizon 2020. EASSH has already published a response to the EC Report on the Integration. Furthermore, for the this meeting, EASSH has also made a more detailed analysis of figures and data, revisiting some Issue Papers that the DGRI has submitted for the High Level Group in the process of the ad interim evaluation of H2020. EASSH welcomes the ITRE Committee's observations on SSH research

The ITRE Committee's draft report on the “The Assessment of Horizon 2020 Implementation in View of its Interim Evaluation and the Framework Programme 9 proposal” (2016/2147(INI))" has recognised that SSH research is fundamental for addressing many of the most pressing societal challenges of today, and which should feature in the planning for the 9th Framework Programme.The European Alliance for SSH welcomes the publication of the latest report of the ITRE Committee on the assessment of Horizon 2020 and a proposal for Framework Programme 9. See EASSH paper Focus on ITRE Committee's report. EASSH Response to the EC Second Report on the Integration of SSH in H2020

The European Alliance for SSH has compared the first two reports that the European Commission published analysing the integration of SSH in the the Leadership Programme and in the Societal Challenge. EASSH has also elaborated new data to compare the results. The results show that the integration of SSH is even worse in 2015 than the disappointing results of 2014. This paper has been endorsed by the Academia Europaea and the Coimbra Group. Read our response here. More...

EASSH position paper on the Ad interim review of Horizon 2020 to the High Level Experts Group

The European Alliance of SSH has submitted its position paper on the evaluation of Horizon 2020. The paper is the result of a vast consultation across EASSH members and several other organisations that support EASSH aims and mission on having a voice for SSH in science policy debate. Also the paper has been endorsed by the Academia Europaea. This position paper represents researchers across several disciplines beyond SSH and the voice of those who believe that SSH research has a fundamental contribution to our scientific knowledge. EASSH launch at SSH Bratislava Conference, 15 November 2016

Today the European Alliance of SSH presented its mission to a wider community of researchers. EASSH shows how it is committed to support the role of SSH research in H2020 and how is engaging with the European institutions to the design of the new Framework Programme for funding. EASSH invited for the Horizon 2020 Working Group meeting of the ITRE Committee

The Working Group of Horizon 2020 of the ITRE committee invited EASSH to an exclusive meeting on Social sciences and cultural and creative industries in H2020. Implementation of Challenge 6 and mainstreaming social sciences into pillars II and III.The meeting is part of the work that the group is doing in preparation for the ad interim evaluation of H2020.

EASSH sent a paper with three key points: European social science and humanities research is world leading; The Horizon 2020 integration approach of the challenges is not delivering as envisaged; The greatest challenges faced by Europe are social, political, cultural, and economic, therefore a better understanding of the dynamic forces affecting these challenges need commitment by the EU of long-term strategic investment. 

EASSH Position Paper

At the meeting, prof Helena Sousa President of the School of Social Sciences at the University of Minho presented a paper (link) and Adalheidur Jonsdottir from Net4Society presented a view from the community on H2020< The other two presentations at the meeting were delivered by Robert Jan Smits, Director General of Research and Innovation and Martine Reicherts, Director General of Education and Culture.

EASSH is invited at the EC Third Stakeholders' Meeting on SSH in Horizon 2020

On 5 July 2016, EASSH took part in the EC Third Stakeholders' Meeting on State of play of Societal challenge 6 and Integration of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) in Horizon 2020. In this occasion EASSH presented a position paper suggesting an alternative methodology for the analysis of the integration of SSH in the projects awarded in Horizon 2020. The paper was endorsed by other of the stakeholders invited...
