News: U-Multirank launched yesterday

By Hedda. Yesterday, 13th of May,U-Multirank finally reached its launch date and the data was presented to the public. The project has been funded with the European Union and has cost about 2 million euros. In this first edition, the ranking includes 850 institutions that can be compared in a multidimensional manner. The key argument has been to provide a system where institutional scores are not aggregated to one single score, but provide a means for users to rank institutions according to selected criteria. Six Months After Layoffs: No signs of growth at Desire2Learn

By Michael Feldstein. Late last year I wrote a post about Desire2Learn’s laying off more than 7% of the workforce, speculating that something had changed at the company. In particular, I didn’t buy the company line about continued growth.
In the end, I have trouble believing that these recent cuts are solely based on improving Desire2Learn’s growth without needing to correct for slower-than-expected growth. The arguments made by our sources that these are significant cuts driven by not hitting growth targets are compelling. However, there is no smoking gun that I have found to back up these claims definitively. More...

Policy Updates on FERPA and Net Neutrality

By Michael Feldstein. Two policy debates that could have a significant impact on education – updates on FERPA and data privacy & FCC proposals on Net Neutrality – both entered the next stage this week.
FERPA Modernization
I recently wrote about the new federal moves to update FERPA to handle the age of Big Data (should I have used scare quotes there?). More...

Unizin: Indiana University’s Secret New “Learning Ecosystem” Coalition

By Michael Feldstein. Indiana University has been the driving force behind the creation of a new organization to develop a “learning ecosystem”. At least ten schools are being quietly asked to contribute $1 million each over a three-year period to join the consortium. The details of what that $1 million buys are unclear at this point. The centerpiece for the short-term appears to be a contract with Instructure for use of the Canvas LMS. But there are also hints of ambitious plans regarding learning object repositories and learning analytics. More...

Why 'Educational Reform' Sends Educators Running for Cover--And How We Can Change That

http://www.hastac.org/files/imagecache/homepage_50/pictures/picture-79-873560aec16bee4b69793f2fa0fbd715.jpgBy Cathy Davidson. When someone says "educational reform," most teachers want to duck and run for cover. No wonder. The history of education, K-12, has been regulation and regulated change:  every decade or so, another politician or corporate "visionary" or educational theorist (i.e. moi) decides "everything has to change" and produces a pilot program and then the wheels grind and it becomes a "standard" and teachers around the country have to tear up the old lesson plans and do it all over again.   Typically the reform comes from someone else (typically a college prof, policy maker, or someone affiliated with a for-profit or non-profit educational enterprise) outside K-12 and is delivered to K-12 teachers. Women Adjust to University Life in Oman

http://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/378800000561645093/2ed993b83028835114b5996a05b6f3a6_normal.jpegBy  - Al-Fanar. The young women who attend A’Sharqiyah University in Oman wear black abayas, an obligatory custom in this conservative country at the mouth of the Arabian Gulf.
Occasionally, however, a gust of wind reveals a glimpse of a colorful dress or Western-style blue jeans and high heels under the black cloak.
The fashion clash is a metaphor for what’s happening at A’Sharqiyah and a host of other universities that have sprung up in recent years in Oman under a plan to educate young women for free. More...

What Is Education For?

http://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/378800000561645093/2ed993b83028835114b5996a05b6f3a6_normal.jpegBy  - Al-Fanar. According to the Hadith, the Prophet urges us to “Seek knowledge even in China.” In modern times, when Tony Blair led the British Labour Party in 1997 to victory on a motto of “Education, education, education” he was only reiterating something the ancients had already known: Education is important.  In politics, education is the one priority everyone agrees on.  And of course it is a right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. What are free schools the answer to?

The ConversationBy Stephen Gorard and Rebecca Morris. The government’s free school policy, which allows local communities to set up new schools that are funded by the state, has come under attack in recent days by MPs and sparked a row within the coalition. In a new report on free schools, parliament’s public accounts committee said such schools are expensive, and are not generally appearing in the areas of greatest demand for school places. More...

PISA education tests under fire, but they could help developing countries boost competitiveness

The ConversationBy Graeme Bloch. The recent open letter of concern penned by nearly 100 academics from around the world about the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s international education rankings is more than just a protest. Their criticism of the Programme of International Student Assessment (PISA), calling on its director Andreas Schleicher to halt the next round of tests in 2015, provides real alternatives and suggests a role for the global education community to monitor the administration of the tests.
