The Audacity Of Udacity

http://i.forbesimg.com/assets/img/forbes_logo/forbes_logo_white.pngBy Michael Horn. Why people thought that the massive open online course (MOOC) providers would disrupt U.S. higher education by themselves by simply offering traditional university courses online for free has never made much sense. Yet judging from many of the pieces that have been published since Udacity announced its alleged “pivot” to focus on providing learning opportunities that integrate tightly with employer needs, that’s what many people thought. Some of the confusion seems to have stemmed from a misunderstanding of what much of higher education does and is incentivized to do (hint: research often trumps the teaching and learning part of the equation) and how higher education imparts value for students—not primarily through learning in many cases, but in fact through the sorting certain institutions do, the market signal that a degree sends, and the network—or access to social capital—that institutions provide. The Intrigue Of Coursera

http://i.forbesimg.com/assets/img/forbes_logo/forbes_logo_white.pngBy Michael Horn. Coursera, the popular massive open online course (MOOC) platform, intrigues. With over 5 million students served and $85 million raised—both numbers are first among the “MOOC platforms”—it’s the type of company that captures the imagination of people in Silicon Valley who dream of transforming sectors. Its reach and emerging focus on K–12 professional development were prime reasons that we at the Clayton Christensen Institute, along with the Silicon Schools Fund and the New Teacher Center, recently offered a MOOC on blended learning through Coursera. Bundesrechnungshof prüft Deutschlandstipendium

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTq7zVj0E3o4PVfdx5Gkbh29pUZfjVy3TZZFRRDM7iyTyexZTcXAMVlfgVon Andreas Maisch.

'Debt-free' degree plan could benefit 50,000 workers a year

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/c55907932af8ee96c21b7d89a9ebeedb4602fbbf/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifBy . Firms and government would pay costs under Labour scheme, which may form part of party's 2015 manifesto. Plans to allow 50,000 would-be graduates a year to acquire "debt-free" honours degrees, part-funded by their employers, are being considered by Labour in order to tailor university education more closely to the needs of business and young people. 'Lost' generation

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/c55907932af8ee96c21b7d89a9ebeedb4602fbbf/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifBy Patrick Ainley. Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett's sample of the "lost" class of 2005 university graduates (28 December) confirms the findings of larger and more representative surveys that "almost half of those who've graduated in the last five years in the UK are in non-graduate jobs for which they are overqualified and underpaid. This means the average graduate 'starting salary' of £29,000 is a distant dream for many university leavers, as they take anything that's going in a competitive labour market and render it even more difficult for the less-qualified to find work". Training Ph.D.’s to Teach Where the Jobs Are

By Paula Krebs. As I was following the annual Council of Graduate Schools meeting on Twitter (#CGS53), I wondered why they hadn’t invited me to speak.
Not me, personally. But someone like me—a dean or department chair at the kind of place most doctoral students (the ones who get jobs) will end up teaching.
I thought about this after @VersatilePhD tweeted a suggestion from Stanford English professor Jennifer Summit: “We can learn from Ph.D. grads who’ve gone on to teaching-intensive institutions.”
Yes. Yes, doctoral programs, you can learn from the teaching institutions how better to prepare Ph.D.'s to teach at teaching institutions. See more...

That’s the million dollar question at the start of this new year. Unfortunately, charting a precise course for success over the next 12 months isn’t possible. More...
