Institutional Network of the Universities from the Capitals of Europe (UNICA) is a network of 42 universities from the capital cities of Europe, with a combined strength of over 120,000 staff and 1,500,000 students. Its role is to promote academic excellence, integration and co-operation between member universities throughout Europe. It seeks also to be a driving force in the development of the Bologna process and to facilitate the integration of universities from Central and Eastern Europe into the European higher education area. Graduate unemployment remains low over long term
By David Matthews. Almost nine out of ten graduates from the class of 2008-09 are in work, according to new data, and just over 3 per cent are unemployed. The statistics show that the graduates are fairing much better in the labour market than they were six months after leaving university. Surveyed half a year after graduating, 7.2 per cent of 2008-09 leavers were unemployed. But this proportion dropped to 3.2 per cent in the following three years, while the number in work rose from 73.4 per cent to 87.1 per cent, according to the Higher Education Statistics Authority’s longitudinal survey of graduate destinations. Higher Education and Research-Council of Europe
The work of the Council of Europe in the field of higher education and research focuses on issues related to the recognition of qualifications, public responsibility for higher education and research, higher education governance and other fields relevant for the establishment of the European Higher Education Area by 2010. The Council of Europe also supports reform of higher education in the so-called priority regions, mainly the South East Europe, South Caucasus and CIS countries. QAA guides universities on information to students
By John Morgan. Ensuring prospective students get accurate information on workload, class sizes and teaching is the aim of new guidance from the quality watchdog. The Quality Assurance Agency’s guidance is aimed at supporting universities and colleges in making information available to current and prospective students, and at advising students on the questions to ask about teaching when applying for a course. “There is now more choice than ever before of where and what to study, and universities and colleges need to get it right in the information they provide to their current and future students,” said Jayne Mitchell, director of research, development and partnerships at the QAA. The Mission of the International Network of Universities (INU) is to advance the internationalization of INU member institutions through co-operation in university management, research collaboration and student and staff mobility. It allows member universities to provide a richer array of international activities and allows members to share good practice. Feds resume effort to regulate for-profit colleges on their ‘gainful employment’ record
By .The Obama administration resumed a controversial effort Friday to regulate for-profit colleges and certain others that offer career-training programs to help graduates obtain “gainful employment.”

Obama’s plan to rate college generates major debate among academic leaders

President Obama’s pledge to begin federal ratings of colleges by 2015 has touched off widespread debate in academia, exposing a divide that can be seen in the reactions of higher education leaders, such as those at two Maryland schools that are almost polar opposites. University of Maryland President Wallace D. Loh endorses the plan Obama announced Aug. 22 to rate colleges on the value they deliver for students and link federal student aid to those findings. “At stake is whether higher education remains the great equalizer of conditions in our democracy,” said the leader of the 37,200-student public flagship in College Park.
