Universities ‘should give more IP to business’
By David Matthews. Universities should give more intellectual property over to small- and medium-sized British businesses. That is the view of Andy Hopper, the outgoing president of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, who steps down from the role next month.
He said that taxpayers were funding the creation of intellectual property in universities, “so it seems reasonable that more of this is made available to UK SMEs that are best positioned to add value and commercialise it”.
He suggested that in return, universities take a 1 or 2 per cent shareholding in the company, which would be “more of a goodwill gesture than a conventional transaction”. More...

Private institution passes QAA review
By John Morgan. Richmond, the American International University in London has become one of the rare private providers to pass a full review by the quality watchdog. Not-for-profit Richmond – which describes itself as an international, liberal arts, and business studies institution and has around 1,000 students – has undergone a successful institutional review by the Quality Assurance Agency. Publicly-funded universities must undergo institutional review by the QAA. However, it is not an automatic requirement for private providers. Net migration rise sparks fears of new clampdown
By John Morgan. Visa applications from overseas students seeking to study at universities are up 4 per cent despite the government’s toughening of the visa regime. However, today’s quarterly migration figures – from the Office for National Statistics – also show a rise in net migration thanks to a fall in the number of people emigrating from the UK. That may prompt the government to further tighten the rules for overseas students in a bid to meet its target of reducing net migration to the “tens of thousands” by 2015. The figures suggest that the further education and schools sectors, rather than higher education, have borne the brunt of the government’s visa crackdown. More...
