Visa delays hurt Canada's international students

http://www.cbc.ca/i/regional/v11/img/cbclogo_sprite.pngForeign service worker strike felt by McGill University. McGill University says visa delays could set back the education of some international students by a year.
“That’s a real possibility that there will be students missing in the ranks,” said McGill University’s Dean of Students, André Costopoulos. The strike by Canadian foreign service workers is causing a significant backlog in visa applications, which could have serious consequences for Canada’s international students. Read more...

'Forbes' Boots 4 Colleges From Its Rankings

HomeForbes, which this week unveiled its latest college rankings, banished four institutions for two years. The four that will not be eligible for the next two years are Claremont McKenna and Iona Colleges, and Bucknell and Emory Universities -- all of which have admitted to reporting false data in past year to various entities. "As a penalty for their dishonesty – and an acknowledgment of the growing scope of the problem – we are removing the four institutions from our list of the country’s best schools for two years," said an article in the magazine. 'Shake Up' for Higher Ed

HomeBy Scott Jaschik. President Obama vowed Wednesday that he would soon unveil a plan to promote significant reform in higher education -- with an emphasis on controlling what colleges charge students and families.
"[I]n the coming months, I will lay out an aggressive strategy to shake up the system, tackle rising costs, and improve value for middle-class students and their families. It is critical that we make sure that college is affordable for every single American who’s willing to work for it," said Obama, in a speech at Knox College. Read more...

Pro-English or Anti-Immigrant?

HomeBy Scott Jaschik. A student's lawsuit against Pima Community College started going viral last week on conservative blogs and websites, featuring headlines like "War on English Language" and "Student Booted from U.S. College for Favoring English!" The college has denied the charges -- and some observers see the suit as an attack in the education of Latino students, a key constituency for Pima, which is located in Arizona. Read more...

Embargoes for Dissertations?

HomeBy Scott Jaschik. The American Historical Association has released a policy calling on history departments and university libraries to allow students to place embargoes on the online versions of Ph.D. dissertations in the field for up to six years. The association says that such a policy is needed to enable new Ph.D.s to successfully publish books based on their dissertations. But some historians are upset about the proposal, which they say isn't needed and runs counter to the scholarly mission of sharing research findings. Read more...

Different Kind of Ranking?

HomeBy Elizabeth Redden. The common criticisms of global university rankings are well-known. In emphasizing publications and citations, they are relevant for only the most elite research universities – the “top 200” or 500 worldwide. They fail to adequately evaluate or account for the diverse activities of any single institution, not least teaching. Technology transfer is likewise under-weighted – if it is considered at all -- even as two of the three major global rankings rely heavily on subjective reputational data and the third bases 30 percent of its ranking on the numbers of alumni and faculty with Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals. Free Courses for a Big Problem

HomeBy Paul Fain. Free online courses have run into a backlash of late. But a handful of community colleges may have found a way to dial up open-source content to help tackle one of higher education’s thorniest problems: remedial education. The two-year colleges aren’t offering massive open online courses as substitutes for their offerings, however, or for the instructors who teach them. Read more...
