The steady yearly increase in the overall number of Erasmus beneficiaries continues, according to the most recent figures published by the European Commission: in 2012-13 as many as 268 143 students and 52 624 higher education staff in participating European countries received Erasmus grants to go abroad for studies, job placements, teaching or training. This is an increase of 6% in the number of Erasmus students studying or training abroad compared to the year 2011-12. Malta, Cyprus, Croatia and Turkey had the highest increase in the number of outgoing students (respectively 40%, 36%, 27% and 22%). The reverse trend compared to the previous year was seen in six countries – Lithuania, Spain, Latvia, Iceland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein.
So who was an Erasmus student in 2012-13? The image below shows some of the prevailing features regarding gender, the average age, duration and level of studies, as well as the average monthly allowance of around 5% of European students who chose to spend some study period in another country through Erasmus. Since 2008, the Europe-Education-Formation France Agency (2e2f) has been publishing the list of the most active universities under the Erasmus Mobility action. The last ranking concerns the year 2011-2012 and is based on the proportion of outgoing Erasmus students relative to the total university student population.
Just as last year, the University of Savoy, with 2.70% of its students on Erasmus mobility, remains in the 1st place. It is followed by the Stendhal University, Grenoble III with 2.13% of mobile students and the University of Le Havre in the 3rd place with this rate at 1.94%. So viele Studierende wie nie zuvor sind im Studienjahr 2012/2013 mit dem EU-Stipendienprogramm "Erasmus" ins Ausland gegangen. Fast 270 000 Studierende nutzten das Programm. Das sind rund 15 000 mehr als noch im Vorjahreszeitraum, wie die EU-Kommission mitteilte. Erasmus fördert unter anderem Studienaufenthalte oder Praktika im Ausland. Den aktuellen Zahlen zufolge erhielten Stipendiaten durchschnittlich 272 Euro pro Monat, etwa neun Prozent mehr als im Studienjahr davor. La Commission européenne publie aujourd'hui de nouveaux chiffres sur le nombre d'étudiants, d'enseignants et autres membres du personnel de l'enseignement supérieur ayant participé au programme Erasmus au cours de l'année universitaire 2012-2013: 268 143 étudiants européens et 52 624 membres du personnel de l'enseignement supérieur ont bénéficié de bourses Erasmus pour se rendre à l'étranger afin d'étudier, d'effectuer un stage, d'enseigner ou de suivre une formation.

The latest Erasmus statistics released by the European Commission today reveal that nearly 270 000 students - a new record - benefitted from EU grants to study or train abroad in 2012-2013. While studying at another university continues to be the most popular choice, one in five students (55 000) opted for Erasmus job placements in companies. The three most popular destinations for Erasmus students in 2012-2013 were Spain, Germany and France. Countries sending the highest number of students as a proportion of their graduate population were Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Finland, Latvia and Spain.
"For 27 years, Erasmus has enabled students to spend time abroad to broaden their horizons and improve their skills. The latest figures show that Erasmus is more popular than ever. As well as contributing to a sense of belonging to the European family, the skills which Erasmus promotes also help students to boost their employability and career prospects. Our new Erasmus+ programme will enable even more young people to study, train, work or volunteer abroad in the next seven years," said Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth.
