Research with former refugees: Moving towards an ethics in practice (AUR 60 02)

Research into issues relating to people from refugee backgrounds has proliferated in line with the explosion in the numbers of people seeking refuge globally. In this think piece, we reflect on what it means to research with former refugees in contexts of resettlement in an academic and social climate dominated by audit culture and austerity politics. Programme HOPE pour les personnes réfugiées

L’objectif du programme est d’accompagner et de former sur des métiers en tension 1 000 demandeurs d’emploi bénéficiaires d’une protection internationale (statut de réfugié ou protection subsidiaire), au niveau national. Pour le Grand Est 47 réfugiés de 20 à 30 ans, originaires du Soudan, d’Afghanistan, d’Éthiopie, du Kosovo, d’Albanie, de Côte d’Ivoire et d’Érythrée, ont ainsi été formés dans des centres AFPA pour quatre branches de métiers : travaux publics, commerce en magasin, production industrielle et soudeur / fonderie. Closure of ports goes against the 1951 Refugee Convention

Neither Malta, nor Italy were respecting the 1951 Refugee Convention in regards to the principle of non-refoulement. This principle applies wherever the “State exercises its authority, including beyond its borders, for example when intercepting ships on the high seas.
