EAN - 22nd Annual Conference

Zdravstveno savjetovanje22nd Annual Conference in Collaboration with the Council of Europe - The Evolution of Access: Adapt to Survive?
New Challenges and Opportunities in Widening Participation in Higher Education
Monday 3 – Wednesday 5 June 2013. The Agora, Council of Europe, Strasbourg, France
Globally, participation in higher education has risen substantially. According to the OECD (Education at a Glance 2012) entry rates to university level programmes in OECD countries grew on average by nearly 25 percentage points between 1995 and 2010.
This is good news, but fireworks would be premature.  Despite expanding opportunities, participation and success in higher education remain skewed.
In Europe, higher education entered a new era when the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) came into being in 2010; and the Bologna reforms had ‘changed the face of higher education across Europe’. Meeting in 2012 against the backdrop of the European financial crisis, the European Ministers responsible for higher education affirmed it was ‘an important part of the solution to our current difficulties’.
Progress towards equitable and inclusive higher education in Europe has previously moved slowly. The resolve of the Ministers is clear, but can real progress be achieved?

JNUM13 Today the largest universities are available to all, a growing proportion of their courses and the results of their research. Far from weakening, this openness enhances their prestige. Faced with this situation and in the context of international competition, French universities can they ignore this groundswell crossing and overturning modes of knowledge transmission and construction of knowledge?

Upgrading to the next generation of campus networks

University Business LogoBy UB Custom Publishing Group. Network building blocks support virtualization and mobile wireless today and for the next big thing.
From BYOD environments to high bandwidth applications, there is intense pressure on network infrastructures. Upgrading is a high priority for higher education technology leaders. In this web seminar broadcast on September 20, an administrator from Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts described how the school faced those challenges head on when it embarked on a fourth-generation upgrade and redesign of its network to meet the changing demands of its users. Improvements included upgraded firewalls, added redundancy and improved user profile management to maintain a secure and reliable network while meeting demand for more high-bandwidth applications, content and services in an increasingly BYOD environment. Mobile applications help connect students to large campuses

University Business LogoBy UB Custom Publishing Group. AT&T’s Campus Guide gives DePaul University students one-stop access to campus information.
With more than 25,000 students, DePaul University in Chicago is the largest Catholic university in the United States. With 10 colleges divided between two campuses, along with three additional satellite campuses, finding certain pieces of information can be challenging for students.
Memorizing maps, building locations, and class times is an additional stress on freshmen adjusting to college life. DePaul realized that being able to access such information on the go, at any time, would make life much easier for its students. Since twothirds of DePaul’s students already owned a smartphone, a mobile answer seemed to be the best solution. Read more...

Free as Birds Learning in the Cloud

HomeIADIS International Conference: Mobile Learning 2013: Free as Birds Learning in the Cloud. 14 March 2013 - 16 March 2013, Lisbon.
The IADIS Mobile Learning 2013 International Conference seeks to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of mobile learning research which illustrate developments in the field.
Mobile learning is concerned with a society on the move. In particular, with the study of “…how the mobility of learners augmented by personal and public technology can contribute to the process of gaining new knowledge, skills and experience” (Sharples et al. 2007).
A growing understanding of the learning and instructional affordances of mobile technologies (alongside technological developments), have enabled the design and investigation of mobile learning experiences across contexts and dimensions of mobile learning. For instance, the literature in the field is rich in studies which investigate how learners move physical locations, utilising several devices/technologies, interacting with various social networks (perhaps across formal and informal learning settings), as they pursuit a learning path or event.
There is much appreciation of learning principles, such as contextual, situated, augmented and collaborative among others, particularly suited to mobile learning. There is a well of studies reporting on how these principles can be best applied in the field. There are also always new technologies being implemented in the context of mobile learning for example, ‘smarter’ phones, e-readers, tablet and augmented reality applications. However, the evaluation of mobile learning is an area that has lagged behind.
The mobile nature of mobile learners and the application of traditional evaluation strategies and tools, have often limited the scope of investigation to what can be observed by researchers or captured by external recording devices (such as video or sound). Thus, a challenge remains to understand what happens while learners are on the move.
The advent of cloud computing and learning analytics offer potential for exploring innovative mobile learning experiences and alternative evaluation strategies which may in turn, shade light into what learning happens in the move.
