Las humanidades digitales como disidencia cognitiva

http://gravatar.com/avatar/d001d52928b644e0084b766c52f048c6?d=http://dhd2013.filos.unam.mx/ernestopriego/wp-content/themes/frisco/images/mystery-man.jpg&s=50&r=GPor .
Free Apps

HomeBy Kevin Kiley. There are quite a few things that might make the average high school senior think twice before applying to Reed College. There's the lack of intercollegiate football and Greek organizations that many students tend to associate with college. There's the reputation as a rigorous intellectual environment. There's the refusal to participate in popular rankings like those of U.S. News and World Report. There's the "Why Reed?" application essay, which has a history of eliciting eccentric responses. On top of all that, the college's sticker price is $55,920 for the upcoming academic year. Read more...

Updates to ScheduleOnce for Google Calendar Appointments

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/icons/profhacker-nameplate.gifBy Heather M. Whitney. After everyone finished gasping at the news that Google was canceling Calendar Appointments, which we reported about last winter here at ProfHacker, many faculty pursued other online solutions for allowing students and colleagues to view available appointment times and make reservations. (And a brief note before the comments start coming in – Google has indeed since stated that they will keep Google Calendar Appointments for Google Apps for Education, Business, and Government users, but many ProfHacker readers still need the functionality for their personal Google accounts, which they want to use for this purpose.) ScheduleOnce is one option that many educators are using, and the site’s blog just announced a number of very useful updates to the system. Read more...

Paying Attention in the Digital Age

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/icons/worldwise-nameplate.gifBy Nigel Thrift. There is an issue, which may or may not be a problem for universities around the world, but that is certainly gaining a lot of attention in Britain and the United States—namely, attention itself. Students increasingly arrive at university having grown up in a world in which their habits of study are heavily influenced by new media. They are used to media acting as a continuous stream of content that is more like a river of images than a page of text. According to one account, that means much shorter attention spans, much greater attention to visual modes of understanding, greater modulation of time, more and more reliance on interfaces, and so on. (See, most recently, Stephen Apkon’s The Age of the Image.) Read more...

New Approaches To Digital Literacies

http://www.srhe.ac.uk/media/images/logo.jpgThis one-day event will offer new perspectives on different types of digital literacies, with plenty of opportunities for participants to join in the discussions. The morning session (11am-1pm) will be a workshop focusing on the development of ‘informed researchers’ and digital literacies, while the second half (2-4pm) will offer theoretical insights into academic literacies and popular digital literacy practices. Lunch will be provided between 1-2pm.
Facilitating Informed Research in the Digital world
Moira Bent (Newcastle University) and Jane Secker (LSE) on behalf of the RIDLs Coalition

Interacting with information is at the very heart of the research process and easy digital access to material sometimes masks the complexity of the processes involved in ensuring quality. Additionally, not all researchers are at the same stage in their development as a researcher, in the research process itself, or in their lives. This can impact on how information literate or digitally literate they may be – are they new researchers, or experienced researchers who need to develop new approaches, for example. For anyone involved in facilitating the research process, the challenge is to identify opportunities for successful interventions and to develop strategies to implement them, perhaps via formal development programmes, independent learning or point of need. Does Not Compute

HomeBy Zack Budryk. A new report out from the National Council of Teachers of English criticizes the practice of using machine scoring for writing assessments.

Is the internet making universities defunct?

http://bathknightblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/telegraph-logo.jpgBy Saad Rizvi and Katelyn Donnelly. The model of higher education that marched triumphantly across the globe in the second half of the 20th century is broken. Thanks to advances in technology and connectivity, all the key elements of a traditional university – the curriculum (what you learn), the teaching (how you learn), the assessment (how you demonstrate what you’ve learned) and the experience (everything you learn outside the classroom) – are available in various corners of the web.
They no longer need to be located together in one, bricks-and-mortar place. Read more...

Methods for Organizing Your Apps

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/icons/profhacker-nameplate.gifBy Erin E. Templeton. ProfHacker has featured several posts about various mobile apps. See for instance the Open Thread Wednesday dedicated to (y)our Favorite Weather Apps, guest author Ian MacInnes’s post on “Finding the Best iOS App for Annotation and Note-Taking,” and my previous post on GradeBook Pro to name just a few. But once you have all of these apps, what do you do with them? Or how do you organize them so that you can access them quickly and easily? Are you someone who has a dozen different screens that you must weed through on a regular basis? Or do you have a system? I have a system. I adopted it a year or so ago, and it has worked wonders for me. Read more...
