Beyond intuition: towards informed internationalisation strategies

By Rahul Choudaha. Strategy is about making tough choices. As Michael Porter asserts in the Harvard Business Review, “Strategy renders choices about what not to do as important as choices about what to do.” Higher education leaders are expected to drive the decision-making processes and set the future directions for their universities or departments. Rahul Choudaha, winner of the 2013 EAIE Tony Adams Award, shares his perspective about the importance of informed internationalisation strategies in this second blog in our series featuring EAIE award winners. Students should be at the centre of internationalisation

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Robert Coelen. As educators, we need to be aware of the forces that shape the future of education and the world for which we prepare graduates. A major factor that will shape the global demand for higher education relates to the development of middle-class populations throughout the world. Read more...

The Internationalization of Higher Education: Next Steps for Europe

By Erin Nordal. The internationalization of higher education has become a reality for many, with a systematic increase in both shorter-term student mobility and full-degree mobility in many parts of the world. This plays a key role in enhancing intercultural competencies and understanding, and ultimately enhances the quality of higher education through the introduction of global perspectives in curricula.
As an umbrella organization for 47 national unions of students in 39 countries, the European Students’ Union (ESU) represents over 11 million students in Europe. Internationalization is a main area in our work in representing and promoting students’ social, economic and cultural interests. More...

Foreign-student programs lose humanitarian roots

By Douglas Todd. Profit motive: Experts call for educational reform and a rethinking of the drive to attract more foreign students that is motivated by money not altruism. It’s time for promoters of international student programs to stop acting as if they are “white knights.”
That’s the view of Hanneke Teekens, one of many scholars studying the so-called “internationalization of higher education” who are growing worried about the ethical pitfalls that have opened up with the meteoric rise in the number of foreign students in the Western world. Read more...

From 6 to 8 November, 2013, in partnership with the Malaysian Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), the IAU held a capacity building workshop on internationalization designed for Malaysian senior representatives of higher education institutions. Approximately 40 higher education leaders from public and private institutions throughout the country took part in the Workshop held at AKEPT, in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.

The IAU called on international and Malaysian experts in the field of internationalization of higher education to help design and deliver the training program. These included, Dr. Madeleine Green, IAU Senior Fellow, Hans de Wit, Director, Centre for Higher Education Internationalization, Università Cattolica Sacro Cuore, Italy, Pro. Betty Leask, La Trobe University, Australia, Dr. Norpisah Mat Isah, Albukhary International University, Malaysia, among others.

The Workshop sessions covered a range of topics relevant to those responsible for the development and implementation of internationalization strategies and programs, including policy development, internationalization of the curriculum, internationalization of research and managing of student and staff mobility. Presentations also included an update on the goals set by Malaysian policy makers for future internationalization. The IAU will work with AKEPT and other international bodies to develop similar workshops in the future. For more information contact: r.hudson@iau-aiu.net

Survey on Canadian Attitudes on Internationalization

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgA new survey of how domestic Canadian students experience the internationalization of the campus by a Toronto-based consultancy finds mixed results. Of the 1,398 students surveyed by Higher Education Strategy Associates, 43 percent counted at least one international student among the five closest friends they made at university. Overall, the study found that students generally have positive attitudes toward the diversity that international students bring to their social lives and the classroom. Read more...

International student recruitment via informed choice

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Rahul Choudaha. Higher education institutions are increasingly expected to make tough, strategic choices to achieve their internationalisation goals in a cost-effective manner. For example, in the field of international student recruitment, institutions are often confronted with questions like: which countries and cities should we prioritise in terms of our recruitment efforts? Which segment of students should we recruit? Which recruitment channels should we use?
However, institutions unfortunately often lack the data or evidence that is necessary to make informed decisions. In a recent survey, chief financial officers of universities acknowledged that their institutions "did not have the data or the information to make informed decisions in key areas". Read more...

Internationalising the curriculum – Future challenges

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Elspeth Jones. Much has been written about the purpose of internationalisation and what it means for universities, for students and for staff. My standpoint is that if internationalisation aims to enhance institutional and academic quality, the ultimate beneficiaries will be students and they should be at the heart of our efforts. We can do this, in part, through internationalising the curriculum. More...

New internationalisation proposal worries universities

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Jan Petter Myklebust. The Danish Ministry of Education, which is working on an action plan for increased higher education internationalisation, is embarking on a new financing model for state support of study-abroad students that is worrying universities. If the new model is implemented, exchange funds for universities will only be provided for Danish students abroad – not for international students. In a report titled Enhanced Insight through Global Outlook, the ministry recently proposed 31 ‘action lines’ that will enhance the internationalisation drive at Danish higher education institutions, as reported by University World NewsMore...
