Historic $250 million gift to Yale from alumnus is largest ever

http://news.yale.edu/sites/all/themes/restricted/news/resources/images/footer-wordmark.gifYale President Peter Salovey today announced a $250 million gift commitment to the university by Charles B. Johnson, a 1954 graduate of Yale College, who retired last year as chairman of the board of Franklin Resources. This is the largest gift in Yale history. The gift brings the university’s goal to expand Yale College within reach.
“This is an extraordinary commitment from one of Yale’s most loyal alumni,” Salovey said. “It builds on Charlie’s long history of generosity to Yale. Charlie has already done so much to shape our international and athletics programs. This latest gift, in support of the expansion of Yale College, is truly magnificent, and I am deeply grateful. I am thrilled that this gift brings us to within $80 million of the funds needed to break ground on two new residential colleges.” (See Salovey's letter to Yale students, faculty, and alumni.) University and college clubs are good places to meet people, gain valuable experiences, sometimes raise a bit of money for a good cause and have some fun. There’s no doubt that clubs are all of the above, but they’re also a great deal more. More...

In most global university league tables, the UK comes a comfortable second, having more institutions in the elite lists than any country except the US.
But in a new index that ranks universities by how many degrees they have awarded to the chief executives of the world’s biggest companies, UK institutions put in a much weaker showing than many of their traditional rivals. More...

Repenser les associations d’anciens élèves des grandes écoles

http://lecercle.lesechos.fr/sites/default/files/defaults/logo-small.pngPar Serge Delwasse.
• Un rôle social : liaison entre les anciens, maintien de la camaraderie, voire solidarité (caisse de secours) ;
• Un rôle professionnel : clubs thématiques, cercles de "relations", bureau des carrières ;
• Un rôle double commercial :
– Une association d’anciens forte contribue au prestige et au rayonnement de l’École, que ce soit chez les candidats ou les recruteurs ;
– Les associations sont, et c’est une tendance lourde qui vient des États-Unis, le principal outil de levée de fonds. Suite de l'article...

Trent University alumni starting to reclaim a past that’s been trashed

http://beta.images.theglobeandmail.com/media/www/images/flag/gam-masthead.pngJust last year, furniture maker Rob Tuckerman pushed past old mattresses and fibreglass insulation to pull, from a dumpster at Trent University, iconic wooden chairs – known as the Ant and Series 7 – by the Danish great Arne Jacobsen. Dumpster diving was something Tuckerman did not exactly relish. At 58, he is educated as a biologist and has enjoyed an extensive career illustrating books for the likes of David Suzuki. But he is also a passionate Trent alumnus, and has been doing whatever it takes to salvage at least part of the Ontario university’s vast collection of mid-century furniture, which has been trashed for decades. That same day, in the freezing cold, Tuckerman fashioned a slide from old mattresses and eased out of the dumpster a 1960s wood-frame couch that had been designed by Toronto architect Jack Diamond with the Muller and Stewart furniture studio, and showcased in a Habitat suite at Expo 67. Community colleges extend efforts to tap into, connect with alumni

http://www.crainscleveland.com/graphics/global/flag_cclblogo.gifBy Timothy Magaw. Two-year schools seek funds, engagement with those who attended classes.
When Al Moran arrived at Cuyahoga Community College about five years ago, he was shocked to learn the state's largest community college didn't have an active alumni association to tap into the roughly 900,000 people who have received some sort of education through the institution since its inception in the early 1960s. So, over the last few years, Tri-C quietly has been building an infrastructure ... Read more...

100 Years of Alumni Engagement

http://www.case.org/prebuilt/images/logo1_new_372.gifCelebrating the Past, Present and Future of Alumni Relations - 100 Years of Alumni Engagement
In 1913, representatives of 23 colleges and universities met in Ohio to form the Association of Alumni Secretaries. Considered the first organization dedicated to the field of alumni relations, the AAS later merged with other groups to become the American Alumni Council, which in turn merged with the American College Public Relations Association to become CASE.
In 2013, CASE marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Association of Alumni Secretaries with programs, articles and events celebrating the past, present and future of alumni relations.
