Comprehensive records are key to successful alumni strategies

By Serge Sych. Although the set up and scope of alumni relations offices may differ from country to country, there is an unmistakable trend across the board that alumni relations are becoming more and more integrated in the primary processes of higher education organisations. The increased scope of services and functions of these offices demand specific skills and competences of their managers and one aspect crucial to the success of alumni relations is an efficient way of recording alumni details.
A well functioning alumni relations office for higher education institutions is essential. Through alumni, the recruitment of (international) students can be increased. Alumni can support current students with their career planning through alumni mentorships and coaching, and they can provide internships or offer job positions. Alumni are important for their input on the quality of your institution’s educational programmes and research. Additionally, by keeping track of your alumni you can measure the employability of your graduates. More...

The long-running dispute between the university and its alumni association reached a tipping point this month, when Baylor locked out employees of the alumni group from campus offices they had been using, reports the Waco Tribune. The eviction followed the university’s demand that the independent Baylor Alumni Association stop using Baylor’s name and trademark, and transfer alumni outreach to the university’s own Baylor Alumni Network. The association has since moved to an off-campus office in Waco, Tex. More...

Why universities should make better use of alumni

http://res.heraldm.com/kh_201209/images/default/logo_bottom.gifBy Desiree Van Gorp. Last summer, Nyenrode Business Universiteit’s latest graduates left the university to embark upon their new careers, but it was not goodbye. Though these students may no longer need the university, it has become increasingly clear to us that we will always need them; as such, we will endeavor to be involved in their lives for as long as possible.
The reason? Though a university’s value can be judged on its position in league tables and rankings, from its reputation and its faculty expertise, there is no better example of its worth than its alumni. Read more...

Colleen R. O'Neal had what many might call the quintessential Fulbright experience. For years, Ms. O'Neal, who earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology, had studied the emotional health of minority students under duress in the United States. But in 2010 she traveled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as part of the U.S. State Department's Fulbright Program.
There she discovered a new passion: studying the stresses faced by the 40,000 or so refugee children from Burma and elsewhere—an underserved population she says she had never heard of before she arrived. More...

Being Global: Making the Case for International Alumni Relations

By Gretchen Dobson. You’ve heard it many times: We’re in the relationship business. But how do you build and maintain relationships with your alumni when they’re scattered across the globe? Should you even try?
For educational institutions pondering whether to implement an international alumni program or for those wishing to improve their existing programs, this book can offer guidance and insight.
Being Global also includes a wealth of information about best practices being implemented by independent schools, colleges, universities and business schools around the world. These concrete examples look closely at managing from a distance, student-alumni programs, programming with faculty and signature programs. A comprehensive appendix list points you to hundreds of additional resources on these topics and more.
Is international alumni relations right for your institution? Let this book help you find the way to an answer.

At a time when universities are keenly interested in boosting recruitment and improving the student experience, the University of British Columbia has borrowed an idea from companies that depend on consumer panels or focus groups to give them valuable feedback on their products and service. The university announced in September that nearly 5,000 students and alumni had volunteered to be members of its new online Open Minds Forum that will let them voice their opinions and make suggestions through interactive surveys, providing the university with almost real-time research data.
