Walled Gardens, #GamerGate, and Open Education

By Michael Feldstein. There were a number of interesting responses to my recent LMS rant. I’m going to address a couple of them in short posts, starting with this comment:
…The training wheels aren’t just for the faculty, they’re for the students, as well. The idea that the internet is a place for free and open discourse is nice, of course, but anyone who pays attention knows that to be a polite fiction. The public internet is a relatively safe place for straight, white, American males, but freedom of discourse is a privilege that only a small minority of our students (and faculty, for that matter) truly enjoy.
