Don Macpherson: ‘Galloping anglicization’ is hardly a threat at U de M
By Don Macpherson. News judgment is a subjective thing. One day last week, our friends at Le Devoir decided that the most important story to its readers, the one deserving the most prominent play on its front page, was about a possible “drift toward English” at the Université de Montréal.
“Students denounce laxity in the application of the (university’s) language policy,” the subhead said.
Actually, it was two students, out of the approximately 1,000 undergraduates in the U de M’s law faculty. Neither of the two represented the faculty’s entire student body.
One was the vice-president of the university’s Parti Québécois student association. The other was the president of its association of sovereignist students. More...
