After setting out in the last issue why the Coalition deserved to be voted out of office, I was comforted by opinion polls consistently showing that would happen. When the dust settled after the May election, it was clear that most of Australia did want to get rid of the Government. The ALP won a majority of seats in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, SA, the ACT and WA. The Coalition crept back into office by winning an overwhelming number of seats in Queensland. More...
Working in the interest of casuals (The Thesis Whisperer, Advocate 26 02)
In 2004, I sat down with a calculator. I was doing my tax return for 2003, which was complicated. During that financial year I had worked 26 hours a week as a casual academic over four different universities and earned roughly $30,000 before tax. As of 2019, host countries in Europe are still dealing with the aftermath. But Germany has quickly risen to the fore for its initial welcome and the innovative approaches it has taken to accommodating the arrival of newcomers four years ago. Based on interviews conducted in the summer of 2019 as part of an intensive two-week study tour that explored the integration of refugees into German higher education, this blog post will briefly discuss Germany's approach to integration through higher education and how this has made for a German higher education landscape that is more inclusive of refugees. Breaking the silence: encompassing Roma voices in Europe
International academic mobility is often preoccupied with selected forms of exclusion, particularly those defined by race. When it comes to study abroad involving US students, this focus unintentionally reinforces notions of American exceptionalism, as if the conditions of the United States – in which race is the default distinction – are of global significance. In Europe, for example, significant minorities become barely visible if viewed through the lens of race. More...

Data can play an important role in informing these decisions. More...
