Organisational Issues in eLearning
Found via an Auricle article summarizing my talk in Perth, this set of slides by Rob Koper both reinforces and offers an interesting take on the idea of learning networks. Drawing from work in small words theory, Koper proposes modelling learning networks as a graph where the learning is a set of 'activity nodes' within some knowledge domain (what I would call an environment). Agent Support for Online Learning
Agent Support for Online Learning
In a sense, this is the 'other' way to approach the discovery and organization of online materials: through the use of agents. This paper describes the use of agents in an educational environment, "It is our claim that well-chosen software technologies, involving agents, can raise the self-organising powers of the network sufficiently to make a LN [Learning Networks] a viable option." Why do I call this the 'other' approach? It's not clear to me at this point that something as complex as an agent is required; I think that the network may be more robust than anticipated. More...

Zoom In
Zoom InJasc, the company that makes Paint Shop pro, has been sold to Corel. I use Paint Shop Pro for all my photo editing and graphics work, so I view the sale with some apprehension. Jasc has done a lot of things right over the years, encapsulated in the latest version of their newsletter - note the combination of information, advertising and learning. More...

Perth and Fremantle
Perth and FremantleSo this is it, my last day in Australia, as I board my flight in just a few hours and return to what I am told is a very rainy Moncton. I cannot say enough about the reception I have received here, the great people, the incredible experiences. Thank you to everyone here in the land down under, and I wait eagerly for my chance to return. Meanwhile, photos from Perth and Fremantle have been added to my site in the usual place. Ontario School Board Stretches Network over 71,000 Sq. Km.
Ontario School Board Stretches Network over 71,000 Sq. Km.A million dollars may seem like a lot for a wireless network - aftr all, the one in my home only cost me $700 (to set up one hub and five computers). But when you look at the stats of this networked being rolled out in the Ontario (Canada) district of Keewatin, a million doesn't seem so large: 7,000 students in 27 remote locations spread out over some 71,000 square kilometres.
