University rankings: UK 'a stand-out performer'

BBCBy Katherine Sellgren. The UK has 34 universities in the Times Higher Education ranking of the world's top 200 institutions.
Oxford climbs to second place, while Cambridge and Imperial College London also make the top 10 in fourth and eighth places respectively.
Keeping the top spot for the fifth consecutive year is the California Institute of Technology in the US.
Europe has a record number of universities in the world top 200, with 105 compared to 87 last year. More...

The 2015 “World University” rankings were released by Times Higher Education in London on Wednesday, but don’t confuse them with the “2015 World University Rankings” issued in July by a Saudi Arabian group, or the U.S. News & World Report’s “2015 Best Global University Rankings,” or the 2015 “Academic Ranking of World Universities” put out in August by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, or … well, you get the idea. Canadian universities facing up to global competitors in latest world rankings

Canadian universities are holding their own in the face of increasing competition from postsecondary institutions around the world, the latest results in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings reveal. With 29 more countries and six million more papers considered in this year’s assessment than in 2014, three Canadian institutions kept their spots in the top 50, and others saw jumps in their position further down the tables. Govt unveils indigenous ranking framework for higher education

LivemintBy Prashant K. Nanda. The government on Tuesday unveiled an indigenous ranking framework for higher educational institutions that it believes will give Indian institutions a competitive platform free of any international bias.
The framework will evaluate institutions on five parameters—teaching, learning and resources (TLR); research, professional practice and collaborative performance (RPC); graduation outcome (GO); outreach and inclusivity (OI); and perception (PR) of end users. More...

Japanese University Humanities and Social Sciences Programs Under Attack

On June 8 the Ministry of Education,Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) sent a ten-page directive to all 86 national universities in Japan, apparently calling on them, inter alia, to abolish or reorganize their humanities and social sciences (HSS) departments. I use the word “apparently” because the wording of the letter is ambiguous. Higher education fails to fill gaps
