By Sarah Baxter. UCAS has announced that it will now allow UK students to apply to universities in the rest of Europe, in a major shake-up of its admissions system.
Currently, students from the UK wishing to take a course at a European institution have to apply directly to that university, rather than through the UCAS administration process.
These universities would also participate in the clearing system, which offers students vacant places remaining after the release of A-level results. More...

Academic staff have welcomed decisions of two institutes of technology not to speed up a planned merger but will still vote on possible industrial action over the move.
The governing bodies of Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and Institute of Technology Tralee (ITT) are sticking to the timeframe to formalise their merger sometime in the second half of 2016 after discussing the issue at special meetings on Wednesday. More...

THE last time she was recruiting for her export-sales team, Sarah Grain hired a Lithuanian who speaks Russian, Polish and German. Her two previous hires for Eriez Magnetics, which makes industrial equipment in South Wales, were an Italian who also speaks French, and a Venezuelan who speaks Spanish and Portuguese. All of them speak fluent English. “There were no British applicants who had the requisite language skills,” she says. Ms Grain’s conclusion is not unusual for a British company.
