Experts: The White House Plan to Rate Colleges Has Major Issues

By . A new rating system backed by the White House aims to evaluate nearly all of the nation's colleges and universities. Roughly 6,000 schools that educate around 22 million students are about to endure an unprecedented amount of federal scrutiny. More...

Return on Performance in Higher Education

By . Return on investment (ROI) is the latest data fetish to emerge in our ongoing quest to understand why it is we educate ourselves and our children. ROI calculates the cost of a college education and compares that cost to expected earnings by someone who has that educational credential. If a four-year private college degree in History costs $200,000, and the average history major earns $50,000 a year, it takes four years to get that investment back. If a degree in Engineering costs the same, but the engineer earns $100,000 a year, the return is faster. And if the degree costs less, say $60,000 at a public college, that too can speed up the return. More...

Chinese Colleges Are Trying to Look Like the Ivy League

By . Can architecture alone give a campus an air of Western prestige?
Over the next few weeks, American undergraduates flooding back to campus will take part in a university tradition even older than drinking from Solo cups or inhaling stale pizza: They’ll be setting up homes inside the rock-hewn walls of Gothic buildings that look like Medieval castles, retrofitted for serious scholars. Many of these buildings were designed a century ago, when young American colleges—desperate to assert their legitimacy—went on a knock-off binge. They cloned British universities’ libraries, cathedrals, quads, sculptures and even dress codes in the hopes of recreating the feel (and prestige) of Oxford and Cambridge. More...

Convergence

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/law.jpg?itok=7sode5LvBy Tracy Mitrano. Below is a paper I am writing for another purpose and a European audience, but in light of the current debate about accessibility and the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act I have decided to give IHE readers a first review option.  The main point of the article is that, for once, the developed world is converging on the same standards for accessibility: WCAG 2.0 AA as a minimum.  Higher education should take advantage of this convergence, no, wait, better yet: become a leader in promoting it. Demonstration, Disruption, Adulthood

Rebecca Solnit recently posted a piece comparing, at least potentially, the People's Climate March taking place this Sunday in NYC with the events that led to the fall of the Iron Curtain. Read more...

Yik Yak is an Anagram for Hot Mess

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/student_affairs_and_technology_blog_header.jpgBy Eric Stoller. When I first heard about Yik Yak, it was being referenced in an article about cyberbullying at Chicago high schools. Recognizing that anonymous posts via the mobile app were hurting students via threats and intimidation, Yik Yak blocked access within defined electronic geo-fences. It was actually a classy maneuver. Read more...

Climate for the World We Want

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/library_babel_fish_blog_header.jpg?itok=qNL3hM7KBy Barbara Fister. Librarians love to talk about technology when they talk about the future. One narrative is that the future will be fabulously liberating because everyone will be connected and creative and we won’t be beholden to stodgy old gatekeepers; we’ll all be creative entrepreneurs. Another is a fear narrative about how the future will be without libraries unless we take immediate steps to change radically in some preferred way. And there’s a third position, more common among non-librarians, that the library was a glorious thing until barbarians threw out the books to make room for computers. Read more...

What Makes a Good Course?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/CRW.jpgBy Lee Skallerup Bessette. I’m teaching a one-credit class this semester in the Preparing Future Faculty program called College Teaching. In it, we are talking about, well, unsurprisingly, college teaching. Last week was our first class and we started by discussing what makes a good professor or teacher. The students had read the first chapter of The Courage to Teach, and they wrote about an experience or person who shaped their attitude towards education. We were in the right mind-space for talking about good teachers. Read more...
