A promising proposal for higher ed funding

The Denver PostA proposal to tie state funding of higher education to specific goals has the potential to encourage colleges and universities to double down on important objectives, like boosting the number of graduates.
So we support in broad terms the concept that Colorado House Speaker Mark Ferrandino is promoting in seeking to rewrite the higher education funding model. However, with less than eight weeks left in the session it's not clear there's enough time to fully vet the specifics. More...

Obama Administration Takes Action to Protect Americans from Predatory, Poor-Performing Career Colleges

Ed.gov logoNew 'gainful employment' proposal targets training programs that saddle students with debt but provide few opportunities for success.
The Obama Administration announced today new steps to address growing concerns about burdensome student loan debt by requiring career colleges to do a better job of preparing students for gainful employment—or risk losing access to taxpayer-funded federal student aid.

Boiling down employment outcomes to a single metric isn't easy, many college officials say, since hurdles stand in the way of gathering meaningful figures and conveying them. Others say they are leery of tying the nuances of educational success to dollar figures.
But with student-loan debt outstanding hitting a record $1.1 trillion, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the issue of quantifying graduate success has become increasingly important as colleges come under pressure to prove the education they provide is worth the investment. College bill reflects big crises

The Herald, Sharon, Pa.By John Finnerty. Opening an escape hatch for universities to flee the state’s higher education system is an idea that doesn’t seem to have much support outside the southeast corner of Pennsylvania.  But lawmakers and education officials say that doesn’t diminish the enrollment and financial crisis facing those schools.
A dozen of the 14 universities in the State System of Higher Education are enrolling fewer students. They are straining under two years of flat funding, which followed an 18 percent cut in state support during Gov. Tom Corbett’s first year in office, said system spokesman Kenn Marshall. More...
