MOOC Provider: Dropouts Shouldn't Be Seen as 'Negative'

FutureLearn, the British provider of massive open online courses, is planning to create "badges" that can be earned for each section of its MOOCs, Times Higher Education reported. This will make it easier for those who enroll to show that they have learned something even if they do not complete the course. Martin Bean, vice chancellor of the Open University, which created FutureLearn, said that it was "sad" when journalists talk about those who don't finish MOOCs as "dropouts." Read more...

Rules on Foreign Campuses in India

Imposing new regulations governing foreign university campuses in India have been drafted by the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, The Times of India reported. The regulations would require foreign educational institutions to operate as nonprofit entities and maintain a corpus fund of at least 250,000,000 rupees, or more than $4 million, per campus. Future Job Seekers Will Need Higher Education

The U.S. economy will create 55 million job openings between now and 2020, according to a new study from Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce. Roughly 65 percent of those jobs will require at least some college credits, the study found. A bachelor's degree will be a minimum requirement for 35 percent of job openings. Read more...

What Is College For?

By Dan Currell. My college years were spent on a hill in a small town. I was in the company of 3,000 other people – students, faculty, staff – and we were set apart. The only thing on the agenda was to continue being Gustavus Adolphus College, whatever that meant. I didn’t know who first set that agenda, and I don’t recall a lot of active reflection on what it meant. What did it mean to be a residential, liberal arts college in the Swedish Lutheran tradition? Online Accessibility a Faculty Duty

New Measure of Success

By Scott Jaschik. Two issues on which many higher education experts agree are that completion rates matter and that the federal methodology for measuring graduation rates is seriously flawed. To date, however, no alternative system for measuring graduation rates has gained widespread currency in discussing the performance of colleges. Today six higher education associations (representing two-year and four-year institutions, public and private) are endorsing a new system called the Student Achievement Measure, with the hope of changing the debate about measuring college completion. 'Amplifying' Education's Value

The latest edition of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s "Education at a Glance" report highlights the relationship between educational attainment and employment, finding that the gap in employment rates between those with high and low levels of education widened during the recession. On average across the OECD member countries, the proportion of postsecondary degree holders who were unemployed increased by 1.5 percentage points from 2008 to 2011, to 4.8 percent, while it increased by 3.8 percentage points for individuals without a secondary degree, to 12.6 percent. Skipping Campus

By Ry Rivard. Students seeking online degrees might soon resemble traditional on-campus students, according to a new survey sponsored by two companies involved in online education consulting. The survey, in its second year, continues to show the typical student seeking a degree or certification online is a married middle-aged white woman, but the new results suggest the overall population of online learners is beginning to include more students who are of traditional college age, but not going to a college campus. An Interest Rate Compromise?

With only a few days remaining to reach a legislative deal before the interest rate on new, federally subsidized student loans doubles July 1, the Senate appears to be inching closer to a bipartisan compromise. But given deep divisions between Senate Democrats and House Republicans in particular on what to do about student loans, there is still no guarantee that Congress will manage to avert the rate hike in time.
