By Joshua Kim. What are your edtech vendor hopes and wishes for 2014? Here are a few of my own:
Hope #1. That Higher Ed Decision Makers Insist That EdTech Vendors Get More Transparent in Their Pricing:
Do you know how much your school is paying for your LMS, your lecture capture system, your e-mail, your media management platform? Can you quickly compare prices across different vendors?
The answers to all these questions is most likely “no”. Read more...
7 EdTech Assumptions
By Joshua Kim. Our IHE community may disagree on many things, but the one thing we seem to agree on is the wisdom of our own thinking.
Read the pieces on Views, Blog U, and the Comments on IHE and you don’t get the impression that our community suffers overmuch from self-doubt.
We seem to understand how to judge quality in higher ed.
We appear to know exactly why costs are high (or not high), why faculty have too much (or too little) power, and why too many (or too few) PhDs remain underemployed.
We know what makes a great course (online, residential, or blended), and how we should (or should not) measure learning. Read more...

2nd International Conference on Information and Education Technology (ICIET 2014)
Welcome to the official website of the 2014 2nd International Conference on Information and Education Technology (ICIET 2014). The conference will be held in Melbourne, Australia during January 2-3, 2014.
The aim objective of ICIET is to present the latest research and results of scientists related to Information and Education Technology topics. This conference provides opportunities for the different areas delegates to exchange new ideas and application experiences face to face, to establish business or research relations and to find global partners for future collaboration. We hope that the conference results constituted significant contribution to the knowledge in these up to date scientific field.
ICIET 2014 is supposed to be the largest technical event on Information and Education Technology in Melbourne, Australia in 2014. The focus of the conference is to establish an effective platform for institutions and industries to share ideas and to present the works of scientists, engineers, educators and students from all over the world. The organizing committee of conference is pleased to invite prospective authors to submit their original manuscripts to ICIET 2014.
All papers, both invited and contributed, will be reviewed by two or three experts from the TC. After a careful reviewing process, all accepted paper will be published in international journal “International Journal of Information and Education Technology” [ISSN:2010-3689, IACSIT Press] “International Journal of Information and Education Technology” is indexed by Engineering & Technology Digital Library, Google Scholar, Crossref and ProQuest.

Siri’s Sex Change
By Lucy Ferriss. I don’t have Siri, and so my experience of Apple’s virtual personal assistant is limited to eavesdropping on my friends’ iPhones. But it has struck me as fascinating that the voice for several years was a woman’s, at least in this country. Despite the impression that a female avatar would be “less knowledgeable,” than a male, according to the Stanford researcher Clifford Nass, Apple’s initial roll-out was given a female voice because female voices are preferred in the “helper or assistant role.” The exception, at least at first, was in France and in Britain, where users apparently go for knowledge over subservience. But the female avatar is ubiquitous enough to have spawned at least one Hollywood movie, Spike Jonze’s new “neo-classic boy-meets-operating-system romance,” Her. More...
TIC y Educación
Seminar presentation delivered to , Tecnologías de la Información y Modelos Alternativos, Universidad Pedagógica Nacional, Ajusco, México, vis Skype.
In this presentation to I outline major forms of open online learning, contrasting between formal and informal learning mechanisms, publishing and community-based production models, and forms of recognition and certification. English, with translation into Spanish. The audio quality is quite good, just skip past the first 2 minutes of Skype misbehaving.
Are You Working With a Learning Designer?
By Joshua Kim. Are you working with a learning designer?
Have you consulted a learning design professional on your campus to help you think about:
- Leveraging learning technologies to assist you in meeting your teaching goals?
- Evolving your face-to-face course to a more blended teaching methodology, one in which some of year teaching is done on your campus learning management system (LMS)?
- Creating a fully (or mostly) online course?
My hypothesis is that the ability to collaborate with a learning designer is the single most important determinant of faculty successfully integrating technology into their teaching. Read more...
EdTech Platform Change
By Joshua Kim. Look around at your campus edtech platforms.
It is a good bet that in 4 years these platforms will all have changed.
In the past it seemed like our edtech platforms stuck around forever. We were slow to choose because we knew we’d be slow to change. We worried about switching costs, about the pain for faculty and students in moving from one system to another. We talked about the opportunity costs in lost time to engage on course design and development if we would be forced to teach faculty how to use the new systems. Read more...
SENnet
SENnet provides information and support for those working to develop the use of technology to improve access for school age learners with special educational needs (SEN). It takes as its starting point that the potential of ICT to address these difficulties is significant and under-exploited. SENnet has three overall objectives.
Identify, analyse, and disseminate research: Topics include barriers and opportunities to the inclusion of learners with SEN in mainstream schools and effective approaches for special schools that serve as resource centres to others.
Map and analyse, develop scenarios and design new learning environments: The network aims to develop new learning environments that integrate learners with SEN, particularly employing technological solutions for specific needs. Another area of interest is the use of digital resources that can improve access and learning for various special needs.
To develop awareness and competences in teachers: Enable teachers, school leaders, and other support staff to understand and take steps to improve the inclusion of learners with SEN in mainstream classrooms.
