Web Trolls Winning as Incivility Increases

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Web Trolls Winning as Incivility Increases
Farhad Manjoo, New York Times, 2014/08/18

I don't think there's a "war" on trolls, exactly (the last thing the world needs is another war) but it seems  clear that the web is becoming increasingly uncivil. But rather than simply blaming the usual culprits - users and trolls - I invite readers to consider some related items to question whether it's a structural defect. More...

‘Wait, Your Footnotes Are in Cyberspace?’

By Stacey Patton - Chronicle Vitae. In his much-discussed new book, the political historian Rick Perlstein describes The Invisible Bridge—how the fall of Richard Nixon paved the way for the rise of Ronald Reagan and modern conservatism in 1970s America. But for a number of historians and editors at scholarly presses, the book’s title has taken on an unexpected second meaning. See more...

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/uploads/MIT-MOOC-panel-548x305.jpgBy Tony Bates. In my previous post, I outlined some key components of learning environments, which will form part of Chapter 5 of my open textbook, ‘Teaching in a Digital Age.’ Here is one model of a learning environment that I provided in my previous post.

Here I want to discuss one key component of a learning environment, learner characteristics, and in particular focus on the characteristics of learners that are particularly relevant for designing teaching and learning in a digital age. Read more...

Is content still important in a digital age?

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/uploads/MIT-MOOC-panel-548x305.jpgBy Tony Bates. Chapter 5 of my open textbook, ‘Teaching in a Digital Age’ is about the design of teaching and learning, which I am currently writing and publishing as I go.
I started Chapter 5 by suggesting that instructors should think about design through the lens of constructing a comprehensive learning environment in which teaching and learning will take place. I have started to work through the various components of a learning environment, focusing particularly on how the digital age affects the way we need to look at some of these components. Read more...

The Digital Natives Are Restless

HomeBy Judith Shapiro. Regular readers of the higher education press have had occasion to learn a great deal about digital developments and online initiatives in higher education. We have heard both about and from those for whom this world is still terra relatively incognita. And, increasingly, we are hearing both about and from those commonly considered to be to be “digital natives” –- the term “native” conveying the idea of their either having been born to the culture in question or being so adapted to it that they might as well have been. Collaborative That Once Criticized Software Companies Becomes One

By Jeffrey R. Young. Ten years ago, a group of universities started a collaborative software project touted as an alternative to commercial software companies, which were criticized as too costly. On Friday the project’s leaders made a surprising announcement: that it would become a commercial entity. The software at issue, called Kuali, does the boring but important work of managing accounting, billing, e-commerce, budgeting, and other campus functions. Read more...

Enhanced Government Learning

Public administrations (PA) need to cope with various challenges: new regulations, an aging workforce and the need for adopting ICT. Technology-enhanced learning (TEL) represents thus a sensible option notably for rural local governments (RLG) that need to keep up with such changing environments, but do have limited access to training courses.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device : « Apportez votre propre matériel ». Tendance consistant à venir travailler avec ses appareils personnels), blurring (Porosité grandissante entre les espaces personnels et professionnels), « follow the sun » (gestion de projet en continu, 24 h/24, dans les entreprises multinationales. « all over the world »), B to E (Business to Employee : Se dit de l’ensemble des échanges, services et produits, qu’une entreprise destine à ses propres salariés.
