Harvard Beats Stanford, Raising Record $1.16 Billion in a Year

Optimistic Fund-Raisers

Top college fund-raisers are mostly optimistic about the future, but the poor colleges are getting poorer, according to a new survey of advancement officials at 335 North American institutions. The survey is by Academic Impressions, which provides training conferences and webinars to higher education leaders. GWU launches largest fundraising effort in its history, eyes $1B by 2018

BizBeatBy . George Washington University has formally launched the largest fundraising campaign in its 200-year history, seeking $1 billion to boost its academic, development and financial aid efforts.
And the school, the largest institution of higher education in the District, is already more than halfway to its goal.

U. of Calgary to Get $100-Million Gift, Largest in Its History

The University of Calgary will receive a $100-million donation, the largest in its history and one of the largest ever made to a Canadian higher-education institution, to spur medical research, The Globe and Mail reports. The donor, an alumnus and investor named Geoffrey Cumming, has pledged $100-million to establish a medical-research fund, and the province of Alberta will match his donation, dollar for dollar, to make an overall windfall for the university of $200-million, or about $184-million in U.S. dollars. New Index Reports Uptick in Giving to Higher Education

Charitable giving to more than 500 colleges in the United States grew by 0.8 percent in the three months that ended in April, compared with the same period in 2013, according to the fund-raising-technology company Blackbaud Inc. The increase is reported in a new higher-education specialty index that is based on the latest data provided by Blackbaud’s client institutions. The 558 colleges and universities represent more than 10 percent of all American higher-education institutions and account for more than $1.5-billion in annual giving. More...
