Varsity brain drain

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/simgad/9962728532542217992By Nashira Davids and Philani Nombenbe. Academics are hitting the road for the promise of big money in the private and public sectors. The trend has prompted a study by Higher Education SA, which has members in all 23 of this country's universities.
"There is recognition that the salaries of academic workers do not keep pace with those of employees in other sectors of the economy," Higher Education CEO Jeffrey Mabelebele said.
"[We are] conducting a study on academic salaries across the entire public university sector with a view to determining a benchmark."
A recent advertisement by the University of Cape Town's department of chemical engineering put the salary and benefits for a senior lecturer at over R500000 a year. Read more...

How diversity can benefit all on college campuses

http://www.goerie.com/graphics/logo.pngBy Cokie & Steve Roberts. It was graduation weekend at George Washington University, where Steve has taught for the last 23 years. At a brunch for students and their families, one group stood out: a half-dozen women in brightly colored hijabs, traditional Muslim headscarves. They were there to support and celebrate Aliya, an honors graduate who also headed the Muslim Students' Association on campus.
We thought of that scene last week when the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in the University of Texas affirmative action case. Liberals were pleased that the court left standing the university's system for promoting diversity; conservatives were encouraged by the directive that lower courts review the system and subject it to "strict scrutiny." Economic Diversity Not a Substitute for Racially Diverse Student Body

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/simgad/10265670485235058186By Ronald Roach. With the U.S. Supreme Court poised to determine the legality of race-conscious admissions in higher education, a peer-reviewed study published this month in a leading education research journal contends that, while socioeconomic and racial diversity contribute to a positive racial climate on campus, socioeconomic diversity is not a substitute for racial diversity.
In “Does Socioeconomic Diversity Make a Difference? Examining the Effects of Racial and Socioeconomic Diversity on the Campus Climate for Diversity,” published in the American Educational Research Journal, the authors reject the notion that class-based affirmative action alone will bring about a full range of diversity-related educational benefits to college campuses. Instead, lead author Julie J. Park, an assistant professor of education at the University of Maryland (UMD), says that, on its own, socioeconomic status falls short as a back-door way to diversity.

Income-Based Diversity Lags at Some Universities

New York TimesBy . Opponents of race-based affirmative action in college admissions urge that colleges use a different tool to encourage diversity: giving a leg up to poor students. But many educators see real limits to how eager colleges are to enroll more poor students, no matter how qualified — and the reason is money. Read more...

Diversity Then and Now

HomeBy Gretchel Hathaway. A black and white photo taken in 1860 had been recently discovered and was a mystery at my campus, Union College in New York State. The image shows a young black man with his professor in what looks like a lab. We had a pretty good idea that the professor was Charles Frederick Chandler, who taught chemistry at Union from 1858 to 1865. But we couldn’t quite pin down the identity of the student. What we did know was that around the same time, Union College had admitted its first black student, David Rosell. According to our records, before being allowed to enroll, Rosell was subjected to, of all things, a hair examination to determine his race. An accurate chemical or genetic procedure for this kind of identification was still many years away. As a chief diversity officer, I have to marvel at how far we’ve come as a society. But I also have to consider what still needs to be done and more importantly, what we can do to get there. Read more...

IAU Global Meeting of Associations focuses on Institutional Diversity in Higher Education

http://www.eua.be/images/logo.jpgEUA’s Secretary General Lesley Wilson took part in the 5th Global meeting of Associations that was organised by the International Association of Universities (IAU) in Salford, UK at the end of last month, and was hosted by EUA member the University of Salford and the Northern Consortium (NCUK). Professor Ellen Hazelkorn from the Dublin Institute of Technology introduced this year’s topic of diversity, taking a broad view and opening up the discussion on what we mean by diversity in the 21st century, and how it can be valued, rewarded and strengthened, a key theme for EUA and its members, that was addressed in the 2009 EUA report: “Institutional Diversity in European Higher Education: tensions and challenges for policymakers and institutional leaders”. The EUA Secretary General along with her counterpart from the Association of African Universities (AAU), Professor Etienne Ehouan Ehile, moderated the first plenary discussion which focused on the extent to which international competition and global rankings are driving a single idea of excellence, thus taking forward questions addressed in EUA’s Annual Conference last month in Ghent. For example, just last month EUA co-organised an EU-China University-President’s dialogue, and is supporting the first Arab-Euro University Conference on HE taking place at the end of this month at the University of Barcelona. As part of the ALFA PUENTES project involving over 20 university associations from Europe and Latin America, EUA will also be organising a second Bi-regional conference in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia in December.
