Serious Bloggers

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Jeff Rice[Edit][Delete]: Serious Bloggers, Inside Higher Ed [Edit][Delete] February 20, 2006
The author argues that we should respond to the criticisms of academic blogging by being less serious in our blogs. Hyuk yuk yuk yuk yuk. OK, that didn't work. He has some good points, like this: "Writing a blog under a pseudonym is usually an argument that the only safe way for an academic to write publicly is to write anonymously." Which is sad. More...

Rick Reis's Tomorrow's Professor Blog

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Joseph Hart[Edit][Delete]: Rick Reis's Tomorrow's Professor Blog, EduResources [Edit][Delete] February 27, 2006
Rick Reis's Tomorrow's Professor newsletter has been running for years now - it's very popular and often a great read, but the website was so badly (and so mysteriously) updated it was impossible to pass the contents along. But Reis has finally adopted today's technology and launched his newsletter as a blog. More...

In Blogging, the Benefits of Exposure Are Worth the Risk

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Aaron P. Campbell[Edit][Delete]: In Blogging, the Benefits of Exposure Are Worth the Risk, TESOL [Edit][Delete] February 8, 2006
I, too, can avow that the benefits of blogging far outweigh the risks. Yes, there are risks - but I guess there are risks in any human interaction. But how else would I have been able to find a community like this, with friends around the world, a meeting of minds in common purpose? "So stop fearing online encounters, and give your students the freedom to explore the world through blogging. Allow them to use the language instead of merely studying it, and help them achieve the autonomy that will be beneficial to them and the society at large". More...

Dad bloggers want social change for Father’s Day

The ConversationYou have probably heard of “mommy bloggers” or read parenting articles on a website like Scary Mommy or Babble. “Mommy blogs” have been on the internet for nearly 20 years now. Only recently have fathers begun to develop their own online parenting sites and networks. Today, a growing number of “dad bloggers” are using social media to provide a window into their lives as fathers. More...

New Edublog - The Illuminated Dragon - and Some Good Questions

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Rob Wall[Edit][Delete]: New Edublog - The Illuminated Dragon - and Some Good Questions, StigmergicWeb [Edit][Delete] February 11, 2006

Rob Wall introduces us to this new edublog by Donna DesRoches. A sample: "Shouldn't teachers play with new knowledge and information? Why should learning be serious work? Is this the feeling we impart to our students about learning? If teachers cannot find joy in learning is it possible to create students who are life-long learners?" These questions alone could fill a blog. More...

The 5-4-3 Double Play, or The Art of Conference Blogging

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. The 5-4-3 Double Play, or The Art of Conference Blogging
Interestingly, I used to score baseball games when I was younger (I played Strat-o-matic baseball too). Now that my team (the Montral Expos) has vanished into nothingness, I have no reason to follow baseball any more. But I still do some conference blogging. So I found this article, describing some tips and tricks, to be of interest. More...

A-List Technology Bloggers: What Are They Good For?

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. A-List Technology Bloggers: What Are They Good For?
Honestly, the A-List has vanished from my awareness without my even knowing it. It's been ages since I looked at Boing-Boing. Did I ever read Scoble? Meanwhile - my own daily scratchings have probably disappeared from the awareness of many other people. That's a good thing. More...

Higher Ed BlogCon

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Various authors[Edit][Delete]: Higher Ed BlogCon, January 18, 2006
This online conference about blogging in academia is being organized (interestingly) by publishing company Thomson-Petersons. It's a good move on their part, and while I probably won't submit anything (I don't submit things) I think it will be worth people's while. Thomson, note, is also the home of the innovative Urchin RSS aggregator, so they have the props to be able to pull this off. More...
