Can you Hear This Sound?

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Platypus Matt[Edit][Delete]: Can you Hear This Sound?, Kairos [Edit][Delete] June 13, 2006
The teen-age ringtone phenomenon has captured the interest of readers (and unsolicited advertisers). Still, it's pretty funny. If you want to hear (or not hear, as the case may me) the ringtone, here's the MP3. And don't ask me where to get it as a ringtone, I have no idea. Oh, and do I hear it, you ask? Nope. More...

PodTech Goes the Scoble! and Why it Matters!

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Christian Long[Edit][Delete]: PodTech Goes the Scoble! and Why it Matters!, think:lab [Edit][Delete] June 13, 2006
I never really followed Robert Scoble's blog after the first few weeks. It was an interesting experiment, though, and Christian Long captures the end of his term with eloquence and in a way that makes it directly relevant to me. Because, isn't this what I have been saying recently? "If we do not soon begin to realize that the learner ultimately decides what learning environments they will join, that engagement is not about force-feeding and innovation is not about tightly wrapped up corporate policies and that when you have talent in your ranks you better provide them the most dynamic learning and collaboration tools known to mankind or lose them. Open Peer Review of Scientific Articles

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Nancy White[Edit][Delete]: Open Peer Review of Scientific Articles, Full Circle Online Interaction Blog [Edit][Delete] June 13, 2006
I know I said there would be no newsletter today. And with a full-day set of flights from Vienna to Moncton, that would normally be the case. But today's newsletter began life somewhere over the mid-Atlantic, and Lufthansa's onboard wireless (as well as a 4.5 hour battery life on my laptop) allowed me to linger over this issue as the clouds drifted by. The service has been quite acceptable, if a little expensive. And now I'm somewhere over Quebec and ready to send this puppy out just before we land. More...

VC's Forum - Towards a Global Online University (Raw)

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Tony Hirst[Edit][Delete]: VC's Forum - Towards a Global Online University (Raw), OUseful Info [Edit][Delete] June 12, 2006
Blog coverage of the Vice-Chancellor's Forum at the Open University, which I addressed last week. The notes are pretty point-form, but the post as a whole is an accurate reflection of the event. This extract from the discussion captures the flavour of the event: "MR - with 1 million alumni and 200k students, the OU should turn itself into a business... CY - HE sector is likely to have individual institutions failing. HE has the desire to do everything in a vertical organisation. If you can't be world class in a particular area, get someone else to it. SD - what's the goal? To get everybody educated for free. More...

Innsbruck, Austria

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Stephen Downes[Edit][Delete]: Innsbruck, Austria, June 12, 2006

So today is the last day of my trip to Austria, an interesting discussion with the good people at the Centre for Social Innovation in Vienna. Sadly FTP issues are preventing me from uploading slides or audio, but I'll get both online when I return to the office later this week. Tomorrow morning it's off to the airport and back home to Moncton. My thanks to everyone in London, Milton Keynes, Manchester, Innsbruck and Vienna for the kind and supportive welcome you have all given me. And while I have spent a lot of this trip wrestling with myself and with my own thoughts and ideas, you have all helped me see some of the wider impact of the work we are doing together. Today's photo is from Innsbruck and the link is to my Innsbruck photo set. Enjoy! No newsletter tomorrow; see you Wednesday. [Tags: , ]. More...

A World at His Fingertips

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Bud Hunt[Edit][Delete]: A World at His Fingertips, Bud the Teacher [Edit][Delete] May 31, 2006
Haven't seen the video, but still, this is a great example of the sort of thing I talk about from time to time: "What happens when your game is more than a game? How about Othello, World of Warcraft style? One of my students produced this video as his final project for my Shakespeare course this year". More...

Perhaps Our Kids Really Are Smarter Than We Were: Technology and E-Learning

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Susan Smith Nash[Edit][Delete]: Perhaps Our Kids Really Are Smarter Than We Were: Technology and E-Learning, E-Learning Queen [Edit][Delete] May 31, 2006
Facinating reflection and podcast on the question posed in the title. "We're smarter than your generation, Mom," he said. "WeâxTMve moved beyond that. We evolved." Is it true? Could the younger generation be smarter? I think that there's no question that they're different, that they have adapted to the new environment. That doesn't make them smarter. But it does make them more adept. More...

Working Very Hard, Very Hard Work

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Christopher D. Sessums[Edit][Delete]: Working Very Hard, Very Hard Work, Christopher D. Sessums : Weblog [Edit][Delete] May 30, 2006
The question came up in conversation today, and I confess, I believe that the revolution in education will take place (is taking place) outside the system. This author disagrees. "Protesting the war by waving placards has some effect, but protesting the war by enlisting and laying down your arms or finding ways to derail the machine from within would seem a bit more effective..." Maybe. More...

Blog Tales

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Miguel Guhlin[Edit][Delete]: Blog Tales, MGuhlin.net [Edit][Delete] May 30, 2006
I thought about including 'MySpace: The Movie' in today's presentation, but decided it might be a bit too much. This link may also fall into that category, but you can get the gist from this quote: "Dependency and fear retard the learning process. It is difficult, if not impossible, for students to develop moral values and solve ethical dilemmas when school never allows them to make a decision or mistake. More...

Supporting Learning Through Electronic Portfolios

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Phil Abrami, et.al.[Edit][Delete]: Supporting Learning Through Electronic Portfolios, CIDER [Edit][Delete] May 29, 2006
This is an interesting PowerPoint presentation describing an e-portfolio project being conducted by the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance. The project design is based on a self-reflection model consisting of three major steps: forethought, performance, self-reflection (and then back to forethought again, to continue the cycle). Numerous screen shots; good explanation. More...
