University culture nurtures racism – I see it all the time

Screenshot-2018-4-23 The GardianFor the first time in my four years at university, it’s starting to feel like campus racism is being noticed more widely than by the students who experience it. I’m writing in the wake of “Punish a Muslim Day”, a concept that feels dystopian but one about which students at my university rightly felt it necessary to circulate an open letter expressing their concern. Universities can no longer turn a blind eye to staff dating students

Screenshot-2018-4-23 The GardianA new National Union of Students survey shows that fewer than one in ten respondents who experienced sexual misconduct from staff reported the behaviour to their institution. This was often because they were unsure whether the institution viewed the behaviour as acceptable, since a third of UK universities do not have a policy on staff-student relationships. Education data shows the way

Screenshot-2018-4-23 The GardianThe proportion of schools with 50% or higher of low-impact long-term disadvantaged (most minority ethnic) pupils is 7% in London and 63% in the north. They conclude that to close the gap between disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged groups action should focus on: pupils who are the most disadvantaged (and particularly those eligible for FSM for 90% or more of their time in schools); groups where the impact of disadvantage is high (mainly white pupils); schools where the proportion of minority ethnic pupils in the cohort is lower than 50%. Grade grubbers are simply preparing for the real world

Screenshot-2018-4-23 The GardianAcademics report that “grade grubbing” (the practice of university students trying to negotiate better grades) is on the rise. Some tutors put this down to parents overpraising their children, turning them into fully fledged narcissists, who feel so precious, gifted and talented that they can’t deal with a world or a marking system that doesn’t agree with their own appraisal of themselves. More...
