The Flagship University: A response to the World Class University paradigm

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy John Aubrey Douglass. It is a familiar if not fully explained paradigm. A World Class University is supposed to have highly ranked research output, a culture of excellence, great facilities, a brand name that transcends national borders. But perhaps most importantly, it needs to sit in the upper echelons of one or more of the world rankings generated each year. That is ultimate proof for many government ministers and for much of the global higher education community. Read more...

But the national atmosphere is muted. With graduate unemployment in the Philippines reaching alarming levels, the outlook is poor for the latest crop of around 700,000 students expected to graduate this month, according to trade union statistics. The Disgraceful State of Higher Education in Ethiopia: How TPLF/EPRDF Killed Higher Learning

IndepthAfricaBy Alem Mamo. TPLF/EPRDF’s major bragging source over the last number of years has been its ‘achievements’ in the education sector, particularly in university education. The ruling group constantly brandishes its statics about the ‘expansion’ of higher learning in Ethiopia. What is not included in the fraudulent statistics is the obliteration of quality and depth of teaching and learning in these so-called ‘universities.’  As we have seen in most of the TPLF/EPRDF failed and corrupt policies the establishment of these so called ‘universities’ is nothing more than a construction contract to its own business conglomerates and university administration appointment to its loyal cadres.
