New project evaluates the quality of French-language MOOCs (aka FLOTs)

Six francophone higher education institutions have partnered to launch a new web portal on FLOTs, or Formation en Ligne Ouverte à Tous, which is the French equivalent of a MOOC. Océan, as the new project is called, aims to help francophone learners navigate the open online learning landscape. The web portal gathers French-language courses and evaluates them in terms of quality. The portal is structured like a scientific journal; educational institutions can submit their FLOT in response to the call for proposals, and the editorial committee reviews and evaluates the submissions before publishing the selected courses on the website. Open Education Europa caught up with the Yves Laszlo, President of the Pilot Committee, and Francis Delannay, President of the Editorial Committee, at the recent EMOOCS 2014 conference. More...

A MOOC Mystery: Where Do Online Students Go?

Newyorker DigitalBy Michael Guerriero. What if, as a novice teacher or professor, you began a course and the entire class decided to leave—either from apathy or boredom or the popular student conviction that whatever is not a part of the lesson is inherently more interesting than what is? That old educator’s nightmare is now a digital reality: massive open online courses, or MOOCs, born a few years ago of the seemingly well-paired utopianisms of Silicon Valley and the élite American university, are seeing that classroom management can be a difficult task without a classroom. When the Times declared 2012 the “Year of the MOOC,” it seemed, in the words of the paper, that “everyone wants in,” with schools, students, and investors eager to participate. More...

Henley Launches its First MOOC

FutureLearn is the UK’s first MOOC platform. It was launched in December 2012 and is gathering steam. It is wholly owned by the Open University, but it partners with 22 other UK universities and three overseas ones (Monash in Australia; Auckland in New Zealand; and Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland). Unusually, FutureLearn also partners with three other non-educational, but nonetheless academic institutions: the British Museum, British Council and British Library.
As with all the major MOOC providers the range of programs they offer are somewhat eclectic. Currently on FutureLearn you can choose from ‘Exploring Anatomy: The Human Abdomen’ through ‘Begin Programming: Write your first mobile game’ to ‘An Introduction to Physical Actor Training’. Within this range is also a growing number of business and professional programs too. The University of Strathclyde offering ‘Understanding Modern Business and Organisations’, The University of East Anglia has ‘The Secret Power of Brands’, Loughborough University’s ‘Innovation and Enterprise’ and some more focused on professionals such as ‘Fairness and Nature: When Worlds Collide’ an exploration of policy on decision-making regarding the use of managing natural resources from the University of Leeds, and similarly from the University of Bath ‘make an Impact: Sustainability for Professionals’.
