Mobile app Canvas offers students and teachers a virtual meeting place

Simon Fraser University student Christine Tulloch has experienced the panic that comes from trying to submit an assignment online, only to have the system crash.
It’s a scenario that may force students to explain to their professors they weren’t late in filing — the computer indeed ate their homework.
But SFU’s rollout of a new service has put an end to deadline crashes and delivers the tools students need in a mobile app they can access on smartphones or tablets. More...

Making Canada an innovation powerhouse

By Amit Chakma. Contrary to some of the predictable commentary before and after the latest federal budget was brought down earlier this month, it was hardly a “do-nothing” plan. Indeed, only after the initial coverage had faded did it become clear that Budget 2014 had taken some very important steps that were overlooked at the time: Canada is finally getting serious about innovation.
With its $1.5-billion commitment to establish a Canada First Research Excellence Fund, the government — and university leaders who advocated for it — is signaling that our country’s brightest minds will be more strongly supported to excel at knowledge creation. More...

Hispanic-Serving Institutions Continue Growth With More Poised to Join Ranks

DiverseBy Charles Dervarics. Eleven percent of U.S. colleges and universities now qualify as Hispanic-serving institutions, a figure that may grow substantially soon as more institutions inch closer to the designation, a new report says.
The nation had 370 Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs) in 2013, an increase of nearly 60 percent during the past decade, said the new report from Excelencia in Education, based in Washington, D.C. In 2003, 242 colleges met the definition.
Under federal law, HSIs are accredited, degree-granting public or private nonprofit institutions where Hispanics represent at least 25 percent of full-time equivalent student enrollment. More...

Expat students continually anxious on getting admitted in universities

By Abdul Hannan Tago. Expats with children in high school begin to feel anxious at the end of every school year. After all, non-Saudi students cannot pursue higher study free of charge at state universities in the Kingdom. In fact, only a very rare few are given this option in the form of a scholarship grant.
Otherwise, most expats in the Kingdom, who will have either finished high school at international schools or Saudi government schools, can only pursue higher education at private universities, which charge exorbitant fees that many expats simply cannot afford.
Students at government schools come mainly from Arab countries. More...

Ein Netto-Verlust von 4.000 Wissenschaftlern in der Zeit zwischen 1996 und 2011 ist ein alarmierendes Signal." Mehr...

Four numbers to consider from 2U’s IPO filing

By Phil Hill. With the emergence of large-scale MOOCs over the past few years, it has become common to hear discussions of online education in terms of access and scale – access to low or no cost courses and scale of tens or hundreds of thousands of students. Of course MOOCs are but one form of online ed, and with 2U, Inc filing for an IPO in 2014, we have another example of a very different, and lucrative, approach to online education. 2U’s model extends high-tuition, elite programs to a small group of students.
