By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Kids Shouldn’t Have to Sacrifice Privacy for Education
Dipayan Ghosh, Jim Steyer, New York Times, 2018/12/17
Part of the issue with violating privacy in learning is that it's just creepy to have to give your personal information just to learn things. But the other part is less obviously a privacy concern, in my view, and more of a human rights concern. More...
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Personality Prostheses
Alan Dix, Medium, 2018/12/10
The learning style sceptics say there are no learning styles. This is squarely contrary to the idea of 'personality prostheses' advanced by Alan Dix. The idea is, just as we use a lever if we're too weak to move a rock, we use other tools to help out other aspects of our character. More...
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Highlighting passages doesn’t aid my memory, but speaking them does
Jon Udell, 2018/12/10

But experience teaches them a hell of a lot faster and better than journalism school. Your goal is to get good at gathering facts, perceiving patterns, and telling stories. And the way you get good at that the same way you get good at anything else — by doing it a lot."

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Warrant Canary Frequently Asked Questions
Kurt Opsahl, EFF, 2018/12/13
The 'warrant canary' is a pretty good idea. When an online service provider receives a demand from the government, this demand is often accompanied with a requirement that it tell no one about the demand. So, for example, Yahoo can never inform you if the FBI demanded your personal information. More...
