Fusion 2014 – Unconference and Day One Recap

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Fusion 2014 – Unconference and Day One Recap
Jon Kruithof, All The Young (edu)Punks, Jul 19, 2014
I want to include this post because it's such a clear example of marketing fail. Jon Kruithof  attended the D2L Fusion conference and so was there for the John Baker keynote announcing the name change. More...

Huge attack on WordPress sites could spawn never-before-seen super botnet

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Huge attack on WordPress sites could spawn never-before-seen super botnet
Dan Goodin, Ars Technica, April 14, 2013
Those using WordPress (and thousands of edubloggers do just that) are advised to take extra security precautions as a huge botnet is targeting WordPress sites with a brute-force attack. More...

ELI Podcast: Connectivism

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. ELI Podcast: Connectivism
I listened to George Siemens's ELI talk today (the video is also available, but in a format unfriendly to my MacBook). Siemens begins with a good starting point, exploring the complexity of today's world and explaining why it demands the adaptive sort of learning networking learning supports. More...

Widgets and Webcams: Using Bondi APIs in Wookie

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Widgets and Webcams: Using Bondi APIs in Wookie
Scott Wilson describes "a quick report on some experimental work I was trying out with Wookie, which is adding a Feature to support BONDI APIs. I added a feature based on the BONDI Camera API, which is used to gain access to the user's camera." Here's a summary of Bondi. More...

CCK09 - When connections fail to form

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. CCK09 - When connections fail to form
Tom Haskins has been writing recently on his experiences with the Connectivism CCK09 course. As always, I'm frustrated by the shortness of his posts, as I have to wait three days (day one, day two, day three) to get a decent bulk of material. Still, his take on the course is fresh and interesting. More...

Six Ways the edX Announcement Gets Automated Essay Grading Wrong

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Six Ways the edX Announcement Gets Automated Essay Grading Wrong
Elijah Mayfield, e-Literate, April 10, 2013
I quite enjoyed this critique of the edX announcement on automated grading, not so much for the critique (though those are always fun) but because of the way the article advanced my understanding of automated essay grading. More...

About the Author
Stephen DownesI want and visualize and aspire toward a system of society and learning where each person is able to rise to his or her fullest potential without social or financial encumberance, where they may express themselves fully and without reservation through art, writing, athletics, invention, or even through their avocations or lifestyle.
Where they are able to form networks of meaningful and rewarding relationships with their peers, with people who share the same interests or hobbies, the same political or religious affiliations - or different interests or affiliations, as the case may be.
This to me is a society where knowledge and learning are public goods, freely created and shared, not hoarded or withheld in order to extract wealth or influence.
This is what I aspire toward, this is what I work toward. - Stephen Downes

Stephen Downes: Distributed Learning

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Stephen Downes[Edit][Delete]: Distributed Learning, April 3, 2006
[link: 1 Hits] No, I have not come out of my hiatus - I have a very long way to go before I can think of that. But I did promise in my hiatus FAQ that I would honour my speaking committments, and so here I am in Tennessee to give a talk. Here are the slides and MP3 audio. The talk addresses the usual e-learning 2.0 point of view, but I also reflect a bit on the purpose of what we are doing. It's little enough, and I need to say more - I do want to thank everyone for their kind words and support, and to those special people (you know who you are) who have been there for me and who are now and always in my thoughts. Are MMORPGs "Addictive"?

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Are MMORPGs "Addictive"?
Dave and Greta Munger write a blog that reviews studies of cognition, especially those that have been peer-reviewed. This 2007 study, by J.M. Smyth, looks at the effects of playing Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) on the lives of those who play them, compared with players of other types of games. More...
