Mode of delivery: Learners as a determining factor

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/uploads/asssociates.jpgBy . Research (see for instance Dabbagh, 2007) has repeatedly shown that fully online courses suit some types of student better than others: older, more mature students; students with already high levels of education; part-time students who are working or with families. This applies both to formal, credit based online courses and even more so to MOOCs (see Chapter 7) and other non-credit courses. More...

Deciding on modes of delivery

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/uploads/asssociates.jpgBy . This is the first of a series of five posts that look at the following:
  •     deciding whether a whole course or program should be offered wholly face-to-face, as a blended course,  or wholly online
  •     if a course is to be offered in a blended mode, how to decide on what’s done face-to-face, and what online.
This will form part of Chapter 10 on modes of delivery for my online textbook Teaching in a Digital Age. More...

The Single Best Method For Class (Or Any Kind of) Participation (Thx SciFi Genius Samuel Delany)

http://hastac.org/files/imagecache/homepage_50/pictures/picture-79-873560aec16bee4b69793f2fa0fbd715.jpgBy Cathy Davidson. Whenever the great science fiction writer Samuel R. Delany teaches or is in a situation talking formally with others, he asks questions and has one requirement: everyone has to raise a hand. Everyone. Whether one knows the answer, doesn't know, or doesn't understand the question, he insists that every hand go up and he calls on someone to answer at random. They can then either offer an answer, articulate something about the question they don't understand, or say they don't know the answer and that they want to hear what Person X has to say about it. Instructure Releases 4th Security Audit, With a Crowd-sourcing Twist

By Phil Hill. Inspired by fall events and this call for transparency, Instructure (maker of the Canvas LMS) decided to hold an public security audit using a white hat testing company, where A) the results of the testing would be shared publicly, and B) I would act as an independent observer to document the process. The results of this testing are described in two posts at e-Literate and by a post at Instructure. More...

Blogphilosophy: Microsoft's #Hololens, the #augmented journey

Inge Ignatia de WaardBy Inge Ignatia de Waard. The concept of augmented reality has been around for quite some time. More then hundred years ago (1901) Frank Baum - author most famous for the Wizard of Oz - came up with the idea of an electronic display that put a layer over the real life world. As graphics and computational power increased, Steve Mann (who came up with the wonderful concept of Sousveillance, appreciated by activists everywhere) came up with a system that put text and graphics over a photographic image, creating an augmented reality, the eye-tap.
This is where it becomes of interest for education, as simulations become a possibility. By 2008 augmented reality is being rolled out for the masses: wikitude, Layar, and the inevitable introduction of augmented use in marketing (printing, buying via qr-codes...e.g. metaio) becomes possible through the use of mobile phones with apps. Free booklet on #Teaching with #Technology

Inge Ignatia de WaardBy Inge Ignatia de Waard. The 35 page report (or booklet) on Teaching with Technology was just released by the Inside Higher Ed magazine and written with support from Blackboard (the LMS). This means that a certain LMS-focus can be felt, nevertheless, the report does highlight some ideas and EdTech initiatives in a transparent way. The report is free, and can be downloaded (after providing name, email, and job title to Inside Higher Ed) at this virtual location. Read more...

Learning to Learn

By Sabba Quidwai. Tom Daccord and Justin Reich, founders of EdTechTeacher say it best, “Technology should be used in the service of learning.” It is with this philosophy in mind, that Maria Maldonado, a practicing Physician Assistant and Instructor at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) Physician Assistant program, chose to re-examine how iPads were being used for teaching and learning in her curriculum. 12 Tech Fads in Higher Ed

By Joshua Kim. In a great comment to my 6 Objections to Technology in Higher Ed, Randy Riddle writes: "One criticism not on your list that keeps popping up is that technologists and administrators often pursue short-term, high profile technology "fads" that are aimed more at good publicity, keeping up with peer institutions, or alumni relations than the long-term core interests of the university, diverting resources and attention from basic needs". 6 Objections to Technology in Higher Ed

By Joshua Kim. Are you skeptical about the role of technology in higher education? Our edtech establishment has done a poor job engaging in a meaningful dialogue with our critics. I find this lack of positive conversation disturbing, as I think that I share many of the same values as those most critical of the edtech profession that I love. Perhaps if we first enumerate the main objections to edtech, if we listen to our critics, we’d be in a better position to evolve and reform our own edtech discipline. Read more...
