Genes have been shown to influence how well children do at primary school, at the end of compulsory education, and even in different subjects. However, less is known about how genetic and environmental factors contribute to how well a child continues to do academically throughout their time at school. Plus...
The science of multitasking, and why you should doodle in class

How Educating America's Students Can Be Based on Science
How Educating America's Students Can Be Based on Science
The U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES) yesterday released this report, Identifying and Implementing Educational Practices Supported by Rigorous Evidence: A User Friendly Guide. The report documents a research process that narrowly defines what is meant by 'science': "randomized controlled trials are studies that randomly assign individuals to an intervention group or to a control group, in order to measure the effects of the intervention." Readers will recognize this as the methodology proposed by an organization called the Campbell Collaboration (though you would be hard-pressed to find the reference in the report). More...

Ben Williamson, Code Acts in Education, 2018/07/27
Ben Williamson has put in the work and done the reserach and it shows in this excellent article on the nature and implications of the story circulating this week on the relation between some specific genetic properties and educational attainment. " Clearly the paper is a massive advance for genetics science, in education and beyond," he writes. Looking at the diagram - showing how the 75 genes are implicated specifically with the process of neurotransmission - it seems to me to be a significant advance in neuroscience as well. More...
