Logo - Thot CursusPar Denys Lamontagne.
Suite...

Removing the Blindfold

HomeBy Katrina Gulliver. What follows is a true story.
A junior scholar had been waiting months for a response on an article she had submitted to a good journal. One day she happened to be visiting a colleague’s office, as the colleague was bemoaning being hassled by an editor, having missed the deadline to “review this damn paper.” The title was visible on the colleague’s computer screen. “But that’s my article!” the junior scholar cried. There followed a moment of rather awkward silence, followed by some nervous laughter. The colleague, shamefaced about his tardiness as a reviewer, hastily dispatched a friendly critique of the piece to the editor. Read more...

EUA Research Policy Working Group focuses on open access to scientific publications

LogoAt its meeting on 20 March 2014, the EUA Research Policy Working Group (RPWG) gave particular attention to the topic of open access to scientific publications.
The RPWG invited Professor Bernard Rentier – Rector, Université de Liège, Belgium – to share his views and experience. He highlighted the importance of “green” open access to scientific publications (a type of open access), and building strong institutional open access repositories and internal policies for researchers’ self-archiving of publications, as a response to the increasing costs of subscriptions to scientific publications and the need to respect the freedom for researchers to publish in journals of their choice.
The subsequent discussion, which also took account of Horizon 2020 developments, confirmed that key open access issues for universities. More...

Nature Publishing Group Requires Faculty Authors to Waive ‘Moral Rights’

subscribe todayBy Megan O'Neil. Faculty authors who contract to write for the publisher of Nature, Scientific American, and many other journals should know that they could be signing away more than just the economic rights to their work, according to the director of the Office of Copyright and Scholarly Communication at Duke University. Kevin Smith, the Duke official, said he stumbled across a clause in the Nature Publishing Group’s license agreement last week that states that authors waive or agree not to assert "any and all moral rights they may now or in the future hold" related to their work. In the context of scholarly publishing, "moral rights" include the right of the author always to have his or her name associated with the work and the right to have the integrity of the work protected such that it is not changed in a way that could result in reputational harm.

Suite...

An Open Letter to Textbook Publishers

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. Dear Textbook Publishers,
I have a question for some of you. Having been in administration for quite a while now, I know that sometimes things that seem easy and obvious from the outside, aren’t. So I’m wondering if there’s a smarter answer to this than anything I can figure.
Why aren’t all of you issuing all of your major textbooks in formats that are accessible to students with disabilities? Read more...

The publication brings together “key insights” from a recent NAIRTL conference on the topic of Threshold Concepts. This includes a selection of papers from the conference which the publication notes provide “insights into how we can apply the Threshold Concepts idea to gain a deeper understanding of how students learn, and also how we can use it to gain new ways of looking at our own disciplines”.
An online version of the publication is available to download from the NAIRTL website.

How digital publishing is changing higher education

eCampus NewsBy Karen McCavitt. If you’re accepted to Harvard Business School, you can look forward to learning alongside the eggheads and overachievers deemed worthy by the school’s admissions office, Bloomberg Businessweek reports. HBS has also launched a massively open online course, or MOOC, as have other heavyweight MBA programs. If you enroll in an HBS MOOC, you can look forward to learning alongside … exactly whom.
