Les deux solutions classiques sont sans issue. D’abord la crise ne se réglera pas avec de simples mesures d’ajustement (en général, la déréglementation du marché du travail) en attendant que toute revienne comme avant. Ensuite la défense du salarié protégé n’empêchera rien. Reste une troisième voie « en train de s’esquisser sous nos yeux ». Elle consiste à envisager « le couplage d’un revenu d’existence universel, d’une subvention publique des emplois faiblement qualifiés et d’un régime d’intermittence généralisée du travail ». En d’autres termes, dans la lignée de travaux récents, Moulier-Boutang propose donc un d’instaurer d’une part un revenu citoyen inconditionnel, et surtout d’aller jusqu’au bout de cette logique en acceptant que le travail au cours de la vie ne puisse être qu’intermittent et que ce revenu soit donc cumulable avec différentes formes d’activité.
